One of the strangest features of the far right in America is the strange glamorization and fear/suspicion they have for institutions such as the FBI, CIA, US Military (especially “intelligence”) and any Police.Their most popular conmen are ex-members of these organizations or pretenders. At minimum they appropriate the aesthetic of such men: the buzz cuts and dog tags, the tactical gear…But, do they love and revere these organizations? Absolutely not! They are jealous outsiders, wannabes!

There isn’t really an equivalent worship on the left? What would we do? Dress up like the IRS? Pretend to be the head librarian at the library of congress? Try to give off the aesthetic of a seasoned public transportation engineer? (Ok i might do those last two but I have problems…)It’s hard to even understand the history of the far right until you grapple with their obsession with these institutions of power and force the ugliest part of government and they can’t get enough.

@futurebird @sarahconner and like,y many have had run-ins with the law, or similar things. but mainly, they are just not too smart. they easily and fully swallow propaganda designed specifically to undermine trust in our instititions. also, those institutions have done some pretty shitty stuff and lied to us for years, which adds fuel to the fire, esp for black and white “thinkers” and perfectionists.

@futurebird Republicans hate law enforcement when it works against them. But they love it when it works for them. They distrust law enforcement only to the extent which they are prohibited from committing crimes.

@futurebird I think they like the power and force but don’t like that, for all their problems, they follow a set of rules that mean they cannot exercise that power unilaterally. And/or they know how THEY would use that power and assume it’s being wielded by their enemies against them. Generally neither of those things resonate with the left-leaners.

@futurebird Maybe the answer is cooler uniforms for the other agencies, and stronger recruitment. The DoD has like multiple fully fledged universities that feed its sub-departments.Why not have the Treasury Academy and give them fun hats to wear too?

@futurebird A pretty common conceit in media about cops and special forces members is that the individual cop (or soldier) is great, but the hierarchy comprises paper pushers who needlessly delay him. This persists even when the antagonist is right-coded, as in Mercury Rising.

@futurebird"This was my grandfather's slide rule."Literally true in my case: Grandpa was a physics professor. The family inherited his slide rule; but it had been used so much that all the numbers had worn off.(Grandpa also was a Captain in the Navy because it paid for his college and grad school; but the anti-science authoritarian contingent would not care about that.)

@futurebird those institutions are liked by the far right when they’re committing atrocities that cement white supremacy. When those institutions and agencies start targeting them (such as the us militaries training on diversity and signs of racism, FBI catching and convicting Jan 6th Trumpists rioters), then they don’t like them. You even saw it on Jan 6, they liked the black cop at first, then he was a n because he wasn’t going to let them through to kill reps.

@futurebird I think this ties into the "small town values" I hear conservatives talk about. Part of it is respecting authority since in small towns authority figures know you and your parents. But conversely big agencies are in big cities and can't be trusted. They like the trappings of the local Sheriff, which is only coincidentally like the big agencies. As an aside, non-white skin is a red flag that you aren't from around here and *definitely* can't be trusted, which is how I reverse engineered why racists like "small town values".

@futurebird Counterpoint in the interest of keeping myself honest (what y'all do with it is your business), here are a few things I've definitely seen plenty of liberals cosplaying:- artists- buddhists- revolutionaries(disclaimer: the key point distinguishing cosplay from reality in these situations is that they don't do the work)

@futurebird If we turn the whole idea around - a genuine love for the institution and its people, an inclusive learning about and working participation in that that that institution, combined with a generally much healthier and more sex-positive approach to generally everything, I think the answer becomes clear.

@futurebird for some reason this reminds me of when one of the Bundys (the militant anti-government, publicly-owned-land-exploiting/occupying guys out West, for those who don't remember) was asked about his thoughts on the nascent Black Lives Matter movement and, to everyone's surprise, really, he was like "hell yeah fuck the police" (Like I'm sure he's still racist as hell, it's just that no one expected his anti-authoritarianism to overpower his racism, because with most people, nothing does)

@Virginicus @tkinias @futurebird [Only know because I looked it up earlier today] NOAA and PHS seem to already have uniforms (they just do look pretty similar to other conventional military uniforms though, and I was maybe hoping we could take it up a notch with the other agencies/services with like rainbow propellor hats or something)

@futurebird @tkinias @shnoorg @Virginicus On the bright side, if the sewer rats ever form an underground resistance against the city dwellers above, the sanitation department already has the generals in-house to launch a full-on tactical sewer tunnel assault.
