Right wing media have been whimpering about Harris having a "southern accent" (a Black accent) "her mom is from India why is she talking like that?"...Do they think that accents are transmitted through blood? (on second thought, don't want to know the answer to that one) They really think they have something, but it just makes her more relatable. Personally? I mostly notice how Californian she sounds.

@futurebird Some people are dumb enough to think languages are somehow inherited via genes. People who have adopted a baby from a different country report that some people ask them how they will understand the child once it starts talking.

I'm curious if the "Californian" stands out to other people. Or if it's just noticeable to me since to me she sounds "perfectly normal" (people who sound perfectly normal to a person tend to sound the same as that person, unless the person is very aware of their accent for one reason or another)

@futurebird If I was in politics in the US I would switch accents without any sense whatsoever to troll the media.

@futurebird Kids don't even get their accents from their parents, but as teenagers from their friends.

@futurebird As a native Californian, I don't hear Harris's Californian accent. I do hear small differences from what I acquired in my WASP-y suburban upbringing. This podcast from Scientific American talks about Harris's California accent. It didn't have as much detail as I might have liked, but was still interesting.https://www.scientificamerican.com/podcast/episode/the-way-politicians-such-as-kamala-harris-and-tim-walz-speak-influences-our/

@futurebird As someone who was born and raised in Georgia but then lived for decades in NY, CT, and NH I totally get this. My usual accent is not noticeably southern, but when I go back to visit relatives in Ga, I slide back into that Augusta Ga accent without thinking about it. Usually someone points it out to me. I suspect that Kamala Harris is not consciously changing her accent, she is just changing based on the people around her.

@futurebird There’s a wonderful linguist on TikTok who did an explainer on her accent. Harris has the ability to code-switch seamlessly and effortlessly in real time depending on whom she’s addressing at that moment. It’s a superpower, really — she’s completely comfortable in multiple contexts.

@futurebird One of the changes in the Netherlands since immigration really got going last century, is that we now have very dark skinned people, often with (grand)parents directly immigrated from Africa, speaking in Dutch regional accents. You don't hear their parents are from Ghana. You hear they're from Tilburg, though. It messes with people's preconceptions, but I love how that works.

@futurebird As someone who grew up in Virginia and California, Harris does not have a Southern accent. She has a NorCal accent.

@futurebird I lived in the greater SF Bay Area for the first 30+ years of my life. Originally the Santa Cruz mountains, then Silicon Valley, and finally SF/Marin before I left CA. To me she just sounds like someone from the Bay Area, specifically most of the cities around the Bay itself. As in she doesn't have the Santa Cruz surfer/stoner accent, or yippie accent.

@futurebird It's like my nephew who sounds like he grew up in Minnesota even though his parents are from Texas. It's just a mystery!Yeah, I hear more California from Kamala than "southern", too.
