@louis @Aviva_Gary no, Zionism is the explicitly colonial belief that the Jewish diaspora deserve an ethnostate. It is explicitly and obviously *not* about safety, because the Israeli government has obviously prioritized settlement and growth of Israel over policies that would protect their citizens life. Its very confusing how folks can argue that Zionism is about protecting Jewish people when Israel's leadership repeatedly and vocally say otherwise.

@Elucidating@mastodon.social Albert Einstein and Noam Chomsky are Zionists (i.e. they both want a safe Jewish homeland) yet they have never called for colonialism or an ethnostate. The latter even considered the establishment of the Israeli state pretty much "anti-Zionist". It's a complicated mess. You cannot oversimplify Zionism down to a specific extremist strand of it, just as you can't see Islam as just Wahhabism. Yes, Revisionist (IIRC) Zionists believed their project is colonial and wanted to drive out the Arabs. This view though is not shared by the Cultural Zionists for example where plenty of them wanted a binational state with Arabs and Jews as equals.Maybe, how about instead of goysplaining to Jews what Zionism is, how about you read a more nuanced discussion of Zionism and anti-Zionism's history by these two non-Zionist Jews: https://jacobin.com/2024/01/shaul-magid-interview-zionism-anti-zionism-judaism-history/@louis@indieweb.social @Aviva_Gary@noc.social

@louis @Aviva_Gary I have never really heard a compelling explanation about why Jewish people both require and deserve a religiously mandated ethnostate in order to guarantee their safety, anyways. Does every religious minority deserve an ethnostate? Do white supremacists who call for their own Christian ethnostate have a right to that too?

@mima @Aviva_Gary @louis Okay but, why does Israel need to be an ethnostste? Is that not a requirement under Zionism? I've literally never had a Jewis person, in real life, say anything other than "yes I hate that Israel is an ethnostate as well and I wish it wasn't "If you say "I'd like a Jewish homeland that isn't an ethnostate and won't do a genocide" then I'm all for it! I'm specifically against the Zionists who support current Israeli actions.

@Elucidating@mastodon.socialwhy does Israel need to be an ethnostste? It doesn't need to be and I didn't say it needs to be. Many Zionists, even some Likud MPs, protested against the Nation-State Law in 2018 for example, which arguably put Israel closer to being an ethnostate. Is that not a requirement under Zionism? As I've said earlier, not all Zionists even support creating a state, let alone a Jewish one. Chomsky is a well-known example.@Aviva_Gary@noc.social @louis@indieweb.social

@mima @Aviva_Gary @louis Like, for example, the self-styled zionists who say r*ping Palestinian prisoners is acceptable. Which doesn't appear to be the majority of Israel, but is a powerful political force.
