@foone Older used Wyse (Dell) and HP thin clients are also handy for such situations. Perform better than older RPi, worse than newer RPi, not as small, but being Intel-based they can be easier to config with mainstream software.

@foone if you feel comfortable sharing, what ewaste place do you end up getting your stuff from, anyway? I feel like I could definitely stand to swipe a few decommissioned boxes, but ewasteSF here in SF doesn't really do direct-to-consumer recycling to my knowledge.

@lulolwen it's one in union city that's basically invite only at this time. So to go, you basically need to go with someone who already goes.I believe I could take you along if you want to try and coordinate that some weekend!

@foone They're wonderful little computers. I've had mine running pretty much non-stop for many years now. I think it runs on something like 8 watts, so it costs me less than $5 a month in electricity.

@foone $100 on Amazon buys you older dell micro form factor desktops, with power supply, ram, SSD. Spare parts and documentation will be available ~forever. Idles at 5 watts. The only real downside is the lack of ports. I buy then 5 at a time, they're useful for tiny servers. Also every Dell since forever comes with biOS controls that let you turn them on at night, or when power is restored. Great for remote backup servers. Power on, rsync from my house, turn off.
