It's funny when people say that normal users don't want to use tiling, no other major OS has adopted it, maybe not on the desktop just yet but:Let me introduce you to the iPad https://support.apple.com/en-us/102576And most android devices for 8 or so years https://developer.android.com/develop/ui/compose/layouts/adaptive/support-multi-window-modeMaybe I shouldn't make predictions but I feel like there will come a time in the near future where fullscreen by default with window splitting like on mobile becomes the norm for desktop systems as well

@BrodieOnLinux >fullscreen by default with window splitting like on mobileI've always thought that was the "intended" way to use Mac OS, given the window management capabilities are absolutely horrendous otherwise. Plus the green button doesn't even maximize (anymore?) but fullscreens the window.I guess it's not "by default" but I feel like it really really nudges you to use the system that way

@thm MacOS is a floating desktop by default like Windows, how it's intended to be used might be another story

@BrodieOnLinux Yeah you're right, I just meant that I would expect most or a lot of "normal users" on Mac OS to already spend most of their time in "fullscreen with tiling" so it already may be pretty mainstream even on desktop despite what "people don't want tiling" claimers claim(But I don't actually know many people using Apple devices and I use a tiling WM on Linux, so it's just a hunch)

@BrodieOnLinux counterpoint: both iPad and "most android devices" are mainly used with touchscreen. When computers isn't, but instead they have keyboard and mouse.

@a1ba Counterpoint: most people growing up today's first experience with a computer is with a phone and for a lot of them it's the only one they frequently use. I expect after gen alpha, desktop systems will need to accommodate this to compete

@BrodieOnLinux @a1ba at that point docking stations for Android devices will already have made desktops obsolete. Samsung Knox desktop is actually quite usable

@teto @a1ba Entirely possible but I don't expect desktop OSes to die without a fight

@BrodieOnLinux Mac os is quite literally adding tiling in the next version... i think, being blind makes it somewhat difficult to tell exactly what the new windowing features do.

@BrodieOnLinux i always saw the star trek lcars layout as tiling.what else uses tiling 🤔 ... most mobile devices are full screen first, "smart" devices like watches have widgets, some complex user interfaces on control devices (like an aircon), there are a lot of apps that adopt some sort of tiling like video or audio editors or military c2.i have a feeling that tiling interfaces are the future once we finally work out floating overlapping windows are about as useful as that mental multitasking people think their brain is capable of.

@BrodieOnLinux @a1ba As long as they don't maximize the size of buttons and shit I will be perfectly fine with.

@BrodieOnLinux For very simple layouts, tiling window managers are easier to use. For handling lots of windows with well defined rules or layouts, tiling is also best.Floating windows thrive when you have a few (but not too many) windows and want to manually control their positioning. It is a easier to master, but the ceiling of how much this scales is pretty low.

@BrodieOnLinux Normal people will maximize all windows even on ultrawide monitors.

@BrodieOnLinux No, but they just read their websites in a narrow column in the middle of the screen and empty space on the sides and they don't even think about it.

@hallyesvomet It's sometimes a bit awkward to use on android depending on the skin the phone ships with
