At the risk of bringing untold woes upon my house by asking this question...For a daily driver laptop, is running #ArchLinux root on #ZFS a good idea? Or am I better off with #btrfs?(Please note that running Arch isn't in question here - I don't need distro tips, I've been doing this for a while now.)

@thelastpsion ZFS || GTFO. Arch works great with #zfsbootmenu as well.https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/09/examining-btrfs-linuxs-perpetually-half-finished-filesystem/

@thelastpsion I stay away from out of tree modules since it once broke while i was in need of my laptop. If it's a toy system I wouldn't have this limitation but since I work on that machine....

@apicultor Cool! Are you using zfs-dkms for the modules?

@thelastpsion root on zfs on arch should be pretty good, i am "only" using it for my /home, since I retrofitted my installation with zfs, at some point I did switch to the linux-lts because the the zfs stuff isn't always ready when new linux updates land, but after i did that i have not yet had any issues

@thelastpsion I've been running #ZFS on root on all my (physical) machines (desktop, laptop, servers) with #Debian for years and I don't want anything else anymore. There is no reason, why it would be a bad idea on #ArchLinux.Only on my OrangePi5+ with #Armbian, I'm still on #btrfs, because I couldn't build the module with the special kernel, I had to use in the beginning - and now I'm too lazy to change it.btrfs just feels ... immature.

@thelastpsionBeing the bad guy here: i have tried running arch with zfs (and dkms), and for me it did not workout.Running several machines with btrfs though, and really happy with it

@bahntiger Interesting. What issues did you have with ZFS?

@treibholz @thelastpsion Same but with arch, i'd recommend the lts kernel though as sometimes the kernel api changes and zfs might not be ready.Have been running it for years, also on my Laptop

@fink @treibholz I'm running LTS on the laptop already, so that's not going to be a problem. 😊Are you using encryption too?

@thelastpsionNot really with zfs, but dkms and i did not get together, and when i got it running, zfs was too complicated for me.As btrfs is included in Arch kernels, it was much easier for me and works flawlessly #archlinux #zfs #btrfs

@thelastpsion @treibholz Yep.Beware when you zfs-send somewhere to do the first send with --raw or you'll have plan data on the receiving side πŸ™ˆ

@thelastpsion I will happily run BSD on ZFS all week, but not Linux. For maximum convenience I run BTRFS, for maximum database performance or Raid5/6 I prefer EXT4/MDADM/LVM. Of course, it depends on what you're doing.
