@peterbrown This could use more ant representation. I'm not very motivated unless there are ants... ;)

@peterbrown It's just occurred to me that I may be viewing this image in a different way that many people will. My mom said "so if you put up with a lot of insects you can have a nice yard like the top one" Which is the wrong way around! I thought you made the yard in order to get the insects as the reward.

@spacehobo @peterbrown Yeah it's not really like there is that much less biomass. It's just all pests.

@futurebird @peterbrown Thank you for the much-needed ant inclusion! If you can't lift up a rock to see a thriving bug metropolis, your yard suck...

@futurebird @spacehobo @peterbrown It is not just one's own garden: Several years ago our village stopped monoculturing the parks and borders, stopped herbicides. My parents village did not. I'll typically get one mosquito bite per summer week here, but at my parent's 😱 We even have a pond, but no mosquito ever gets to adulthood in there. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notonectidae

@futurebird @peterbrown A lot of people don't realize that the insects you would need to _put_ up with constitute only a handful of species — mosquitoes, some stinging insects who don't know how to mind their own business, and anything that gets inside (plus probably a few I've forgotten). And the latter case is a problem with your house, not with the bugs.

@futurebird Thank you for the inclusion of ants and people who are dependent on screenreaders! @peterbrown

@futurebird @spacehobo @peterbrown depending on how much herbicide and pesticide the owner uses then there absolutely would be less biomass 🙁

@futurebird @peterbrown Many years ago, we dug up all the grass on our property and replaced it with perennial plants like hostas, astilbes, anemones, hydrangeas, ornamental grasses, etc. Even have some northern cacti that blossom every summer.

@futurebird @peterbrown one thematic convergence i noticed doing this: both "hells" involve lots of random nonsensical objects - including representations of incomplete human anatomy - that are clearly out of place and inserted arbitrarily and unnaturally

@futurebird @peterbrown best yard has just one fault: ivy on the brick will deteriorate the wall in no time. a trellis can provide a way to keep the ivy, save the brick, and add even more places for wildlife to have shelter.
