I've never had any trouble playing Doom, even modernized gzdoom-style things, but MAN I cannot watch people play doom.I get motion sick within 5 minutes. It's weird! I've only gotten motion sick from playing games like... Twice? In my entire history of playing games? But watching Doom? Nope. Too dizzy. It's weird.

I think it's doom's specific play where you're moving quite fast but on relatively flat levels

@foone Rather than just Doom, it's any first person shooter, which is a problem for me because one of the few streamers I watch mostly plays them

@foone I get this way with Skyrim sometimes! I think it's a Field of View thing, if it's adjusted wrong my balance just starts yelling.

@foone I mean is it the same way you don't get motion sick when you're driving your own vehicle?

@foone something I've noticed when watching other people play third person games is that I will sometimes lose track of where the player avatar is, because that person moves differently in the situation than I would, so my eyes track to where my expectation would be - and miss what they did.and I kinda wonder if this is like that, but for first person - the movement isn't the one being expected, so it feels disorienting?

@foone I have the same issue with driving vs being a passenger. Being able to anticipate the movements because I’m the one making them makes a big difference.

@foone I have the same problem! I haven't really tried other FPS streams, but I tried watching Doom speedruns several times before just giving up. Playing is usually just fine.

It's weird just because YEAH it's a kind of game where I can totally imagine people who are prone to video game motion sickness getting sick. It's got quite fast moment and the perspective is a little odd because of limitations of the not-quite-raycasting it does.

But the strange part is that:1. I am not usually prone to motion sickness from games! The last time I remember getting motion sick was when I played a Half Life 2: Episode 2 on a big monitor while being very tired. I made it like three hours into the game and got a little dizzy.2. It's only when watching! I can play doom myself without any issues. I'm a retrotech enthusiast! I have played a LOT of Doom. Never an issue. Even when I was kid not yet used to first person shooters.

@foone The weapon swaying could also be part of it. It doesn't really make sense with how fast Doomguy is running, but you don't notice when you're playing because your eyes are looking everywhere else.

@foone I've never gotten sick from games except for replaying half life 2 a few years ago. I literally did not understand why I was feeling bad. Only after laying down and feeling better, going back to HL2 and again feeling bad did I realize what was happening.

@foone wonder if it has to do with (not) knowing what movement to anticipate - i.e. when you're playing, you KNOW to expect the view to go thattaway (and when to expect it), because you told it to - not the case when someone else has the stick.

@foone Was the keyboard also the execution unit? Because with you and Doom, the possibility that you literally played Doom ON a keyboard can never be taken for granted.

@troldann Nah, just the input and output. The game itself was executed on the desktop.I have been planning a new keyboard (for non-Doom reason!) that'll be able to play Doom entirely within itself, though.

@foone I'm in a similar situation. Games almost never make me motion sick, but Doom and Half Life are among the very rare exceptions. (Tower of Guns and Bendy and the Ink Machine are the only others I can think of.)

@foone For me the screen size seem to make a big difference. I played through Metroid Prime III with no problem on a 20" LCD monitor, but when I tried to play its rerelease a few years later on a 42" TV I got motion sickness pretty quickly.
