If you could have one app magically tuned into a retrofuturistic device with excellent design which app would you pick? For example:* Fitness app would become a dedicated sports watch with VFD and buttons.* Audio book app becomes dedicated player with excellent indexing for books (unlike most stand alone MP3 players) & volume knob.* Mapping app, becomes delightful GPS device. You get to keep all features of the app as if the device was never software'd out of existence.

@pikesley @wakame If I used audio recordings more than just a few times a year I'd seriously consider getting it even with the price. I'm impressed with the whole design concept ... I pray that they never make something I'd actually need since it'd make me broke. (Kind of stunning what huge miss their recent AI project was given they can do stuff like this when they want to...)

@futurebird I'd replace the touchscreen on my car's dashboard with a set of knobs, buttons, and sliders that let me do the same things without making me take my eyes off the road. Turning on the A/C or changing the radio station while I'm driving is life-endangering.

@futurebird audiobook player specifically for kids audiobooks, with a way to let the kid pick what book they want. Some things in this direction exist, but they are ludicrously expensive and somehow operate on a subscription model and don't work without an internet connection.

@pikesley @wakame @futurebird they're aimed at a very specific audience. Rich stupid people who don't want to learn things. It needs to be that expensive because that's their market. They wouldn't buy anything cheap. They're going to have to go to market really fast because these boomers are dying off

@denebeim @pikesley @wakame I'm not a boomer and I think it's well-designed. The price is hight but it's a small company. I don't think this is a stupid product at all. They also make very affordable and highly mod-able synthesizer boards.

@denebeim @pikesley @wakame There aren't many small electronics companies. If this were Apple ... I'd not defend them. And I won't defend that AI thing they tried a few months back (which got more press than anything else they have done... and was bad)But, this is a rare small company doing original things. And they don't have any audiophile nonsense in their ad copy.

@futurebird @denebeim @pikesley @wakame Yeah, this is not a stupid product. For the right people_, this looks like a _great_ fucking product... unfortunately at an unworkable price point. If you're a radio or newspaper reporter (and those still exist), this or something like it would be exactly what you need. Just, you know, for example. If you're the right kind of field researcher, same notation - I've been in the position of not being able to get the phone app open quickly enough to capture that particular noise I was hearing. That _instantness_ is critical. It's a very limited market, but ... yeah, there are people who need a thing like this.

@futurebird @pikesley @wakame All right. I'm talking about the dictaphone thing, not the sampler. They're trying to be like b and o. That was an audio company back in the day. Beautiful form. What it did. It did very well. It was also god-awful expensive. I didn't really look all that close at the advertising stuff, but it seems like it's got hardware in it to make it feel like a reel-to-reel tape. That kind of stuff is expensive, especially in low production quantities.

@denebeim @futurebird @pikesley @wakame B&O are still around, and still B&O actual, not a brand front for some other company. You can make good money targeting the high end is what I'm saying. But yeah: that's a scrub wheel, which means you can do a lot of things to a recording, and the big line thing on the side are a big physical rocker switch, and all that physical stuff when it's custom like that costs real money.

@moira @denebeim @pikesley @wakame There are so few "high end" electronics companies that don't have all kinds of nonsense and lies in their advertising... or that don't make stuff that's just a knock off of whatever the big players are doing... That ... design things. IDK. I want them to make it. Just can't help them with this one unless they can bring it down to like $400. I just don't use audio enough to justify it.

@futurebird @denebeim @pikesley @wakame Oh yeah, this isn't a product that's made for me, either. But I've known people it was made for, and if you're a professional in the right field, it might be made for you. Also if you're a wanker who desperately wants to be a novelist and have lots of parental money, lol. But those people help keep arty companies like Teenage Engineering alive, so.

@futurebird Hi. I deleted my other post. I just played with the different options. On the kindle app, if you have also purchased the audio book, you can read along while the audio plays and it highlights the words. If you have the kindle app on your computer it works the same.Kindle devices will play the audible file using bluetooth. You can not read and listen at the same time, but, you can sync your reading to the audio. This lets you switch bank and forth and keep your place. ✌️

@futurebird a phone/tablet with an expandable display. I’m not talking about those folding phones. I want something that can fit in my pocket and I can also roll out to be large enough so I can read an A4 sized page (bonus points if it can go even larger!). It can also roll out to any size in between.Sometimes I need a small screen and sometimes I want to read something big. I only want one device.

@philip_cardella @futurebird come to think of it i guess that's my other answer to OPbasically a thin, foldable(?) writing/drawing tablet with lots of pages that are either images or text (and image mode has an option to add text)with a little USB thing that connects to any computer and to the computer it just looks like a thumb drive with those images and text fileshave a handle or strap at the back so i can hold it without doing some unstable thing with my fingertips on the edgesdrawing layers optionalif it had brushes similar to the watercolor from paperdraw/papercolor that would be amazing but that might lead to complicating things too much because i want this thing to have absolutely no input lag whatsoever
