If you could delete one programming language permanently, which one would you delete? 🤔

@nixCraft Perl. It is impossible to write a non-trivial perl script without it turning into a contestant for obfuscated code of the year.

@artemesia @nixCraft Q: Which is obfuscated?A)class Test{ public static void main(String []args) { System.out.println("Hello from Java"); }};=======================B)say "Hello from Perl";=======================The worst thing about Perl is that it gives the programmers "too much rope", and n00b13 Perl programmers use it to flex their twisted brains.A well-written, non-trivial Perl can be as easy to read as English.

@artemesia@techhub.social @ashwin@union.place @nixCraft@mastodon.social I can make any language look ugly if you let me write enough lines in it. The trick for (almost) any language is to have a competent developer writing it. I would agree that #Perl allows more expressiveness than most languages, and it does allow you to easily write messy code, but similarly it allows a good developer to write clear and concise code that will run for literal decades without any intervention.

@tyil @nixCraft @ashwin @artemesia Good Perl programmers always avoid typing-error-looking code. This has been true since the 1990s.
