The problem with Vance isn't that he's a nerd, although that isn't helping him. The problem isn't even that he's trying to be a kind of relatable person he isn't. (Although this also isn't helping.)The problem is he's just not interested in ordinary people. Or possibly people at all. He doesn't care if you work at a donut shop, or if it's hot, or about the audiences that credulously gather to listen to him. He isn't happy to see them. Isn't listening and it shows.

@futurebird It's hard to know if he is just not interested or really is just not comfortable around people he doesn't know. That donut shop video seemed to show someone who expected others to approach him, not expecting to need to reach out to them & not knowing how. Not everyone is the natural that Walz is around new people.

@futurebird Interesting. Without knowing him personally, it's hard to know for sure. I saw more of the terror side, expecting to be welcomed as a celebrity and being incapable of navigating the reality. He's changed his name so many times that I do see him as a tremendously insecure person. Doesn't excuse him, he is part of the folk seeming to want revenge for a bad high school experience.

@CStamp This is from a TV interview. The interviewer is asking him about the ugly things Trump has been posting recently on Truth Social. The interviewer has a serious tone but has just started the question. He's already smiling. Because he's planning to brush it off as just jokes. Which is annoying.But it's creepy because he's smiling too soon making it seem like he isn't even taking the question in. IDK why he's like this.

@futurebird Look at his wiki page. He didn't have a very stable childhood and is probably broken in ways he doesn't know. This rightwing camaraderie is probably the closest thing he's had to feeling like he belongs somewhere.

@futurebird @CStamp The best analyses I have seen of Vance is that in each place he has been he has had a talent for finding the relevant person of power and sucking up to them to advance his career. He morphs himself to fit the image that powerful person wants him to have.He did it with Amy Chua and then Peter Thiel and now with Donald Trump. Perhaps it is that the ordinary person is not on that path to power so why should he care?

@apophis @CStamp I have a hard time imagining it's that bad. Basically he was doing a more advanced social thing: buying donuts, but also being casually relatable and showing that he's normal. Sadly he fails at both. This comes down to basics. He didn't know what donuts he wanted, I doubt they even really needed any or ate them. He fails at the "relatable" because he wasn't listening (to what people say and their body language)

@apophis @CStamp Now failing at buying donuts is fine and people do it all the time. Being awkward is fine. But they *filmed* it in an attempt to make something of it. Which is where is starts to really crash and burn. Do you ever need to do things like this? Most of us don't so it's not awful that we might bumble around trough life with poor social skills.
