Yesterday I saw a video from a guy who use to work for an advertisement company for a gambling siteHe told that their target group was "young, single woman who have at least one child" because they where likely to become the "whales"If that's not a red flag that capitalism is broken, I don't what is

@stux the term "whales" has been used for years amongst "free-to-play" games. They seek out the whales willing to dump thousands on the game, and incentivise them. I can see how gambling sites would get into it, too

@stux I read about a Google ads salespokesman indirectly directly telling some of their advertisers how to market to underage people. Turns out if on Google ads in certain countries you just set the target age for your ads to the "unknown age".... That's pretty much all minors....

@stux addicted people with money. They do different things for poor people, which is even sicker: "free" gambling games that give them real money credit, if they spend a certain amount of real cash

@stux Broken ?This is what capitalism is. Exploitation, money above everything, money as value, as measurement unit.

@stux I hate to say it, but targeted advertising predates the internet by decades. The only thing(s) that have changed are a the terms (such as "whales"), and the tools that make it possible. In fact, the idea of using demographics for the dissemination of information has existed since (at least) post WWII America. The emergence of teenagers, and targeting specific radio and television programming based on audience demographics comes to mind as examples.

@stux The fact that online gambling is permitted at all is a foundational red flag. Also government supported gambling such as lotteries, that prey on the populations least able to afford them.

@stux I'm guessing this wasn't sportsbetting or online poker. When online poker was at its peak, the target demo was young men in high school or college, preferably ones with access to parents' credit cards
