I wonder what I should do with the pricing of my upcoming cat game for mobile 🤔 The game won't have any in-app purchase, ads or links not will I add this in the futureWould it be okay if I charge 99 cents one time for that game when released?Giving things away free is more my thing but it would be very nice if server costs could also be paid with app sales..For this game btw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Al6O49aCpRA

@stux is there the option "pay what you like?", though I agree the 99ct is not a bad idea. Why should everything be free?

@leonieke Unfort Apple doesnt have that :sad_cat: 99 cents is the lowest i can go, 30% of that goes to Apple and 21% to taxes :nkoFacepalm:

I got advise from people to add in-app purchases like skins and other items but I strongly refuse that! These days it's a major issue how many kids spend endless amounts of money on apps on phones! :amaze: I won't contribute to that issue..So one way to "advertise" this model would be: One-time 99 cents payment and a garantuee your kid won't spend a dime more"

@stux Free is great, but I wouldn't expect anyone to monetarily support my use. I like the $1 price point for something that's a lark.I suppose donationware is probably not possible in this case, but I find myself more likely to pay for something with that model. I'll just skip something I can live without, particularly on a subscription basis, but I'll pay more on a donationware model simply because I'll foot the bill for others who can't.

@stux @SebastienK But would it not be possible that the dollar is paid as an in-app purchase and not to purchase the game? I mean, that way people can try the game first and then pay for it? I know that way less people would pay for it that way, but on the other hand maybe it could be way more downloads?

@stux @leonieke And you have to have a fixed amount to buy it? Is there a way to set a minimum of 99 cts and offer the possibility to donate more. Or give some options?

@elverkonge That would also be my pref option indeed 😉 Unfort thats not gonna work in this case indeed. The app/game needs to remain free of "links" or payment methodes since it can also be played by kidsI was thinking about making a site or something where people can donate in trade for a character naming, cat in-game or something fun.. 🤔 Subscription based is a no-go either way :blobcatgiggle:

@stux I'd make a promise that any extra payments would be for proper bonus content - not skins or texture packs but new worlds, levels, new stories. I have no problem with my kids begging for new whole new story content but not just new clothes.Sims 4 does both good things and bad on this. I bought my girls the "Strangeville" and "Pets" packs this summer - hours more game to enjoy (and dogs!). I did not buy them a furniture pack. They have enough choices of, e.g. lamps.

@stux This is certainly worth $0.99. There are two problems:1) Children with phones will have to get their parents approval and so more often than not, just skip it and go onto the next option.2) You change worlds from a quality app that is free (rare) to a quality app surrounded by many, many other quality apps for under $1.

@stux@mstdn.social I really find it fascinating how people are when it comes to mobile apps. The expectation of apps being free, and the outrage at developers charging ¢99 for an app they’ve put their hard work into. I am guilty of this myself, I tend to want things to be free but in reality for the people with these expensive >$1,000 phones is that they can afford to spend $1-$3 on an app they plan to utilize. I mean, for starters prior to the rise in popularity for streaming services such as Apple Music, YouTube Music, Deezer, Spotify is that people were willing to pay $3 for songs that they liked individually. I wonder why there’s that hesitation when it comes to apps, maybe it’s because people don’t have faith in their AppStore keeping track of their apps (I have had this problem, moving around my iCloud accounts has definitely more than once fucked me over with my purchases)

@stux Maybe it could be worth it to keep it free at first so more people download it and maybe it could appear in "top free games" and such? Adding if possible a link to pay for it or whatever? Don't know, just my 2 cents.

@puppygirlhornypost @stux I’m unwilling to pay $99 for an app that I don’t own and that will disappear if the developer quits their Developer Account. If I need to restore my phone, that expensive app is GONE. No thank you.

@stux @puppygirlhornypost 99 cents is fine. I’ll happily pay up to $5US for the app. Anything over is a no-go, usually. Subscription apps make me mad. So do features locked behind “upgrade” fees.

@stux Think about how many hours of fun any individual might have. I rethought my purchasing and am now willing to pay more for stuff I use every day, including games. I don't know what the market is like but do consider more than 99 cents if you think someone is going to have than a weekend of fun.

@stux I agree that if you don't plan continually working on the game (improvements but also changes for future compatibility) and if server costs are minimal I, as a consumer, prefer a single fixed cost. And I hate ads in stuff I pay for.

@stux I don't typically buy games on Mobile, and I was thinking of the times I did.The first thing I thought of was when I bought Super Mario Run. It had a free demo of the first few stages and it was about $5 for the full game. One time purchase.I'm more agreeable to that versus their subscription model they used in Mario Kart Tour. Not sure if others feel the same way.

@stux I wouldn’t promise to never ask for money again. If Apple deprecates important parts of their API, for instance, I’d say that both you and your players would want you to afford to take the time to revise the code.
