@ErikUden fun story. We stopped at a gas station in The Netherlands while coming home from our Danish vacation last year and I was asked for translation help by a German truck driver. He couldn't use the automatic coffee machine.With my limited German I was able to translate kleine, große and Milch Kaffee!And I realized that I still understand German quite well, despite not being exposed to it since years 😉

@ErikUden pro tip : many elderly people (even in their 60s-70s) in Finland understand German better than English. So try German if communication is a problem in Finland :)

@ErikUden I did this after I first learned German, and I watched the listener's face drop from confusion (I'd started in reasonably fluent Dutch) to extreme irritation to not listening anymore XD

@ErikUden Oh, my goodness. I did this on the phone, once.He spoke in Dutch, and I replied in German, which I still spoke back then.I then realised what I'd done, and apologised. Except I'd retreated in panic into (bad) French....Then I just hung up out of sheer embarrassment.

@ErikUden I’ve studied German and not Dutch. But when a native in Amsterdam asked me a question, I understood it completely. (I replied in English.)
