Obama always had a way of running from progressive policies. It hurt the Democratic party badly. I wouldn't say the trust has been rebuilt but people are considering it something that might exist. There are a lot of reasons Obama did this but the practical one, the one that wasn't totally his fault was the danger of being seen as *both* black and radical. HRC used that in her primary against him authored a playbook that could always return.

Harris was never in a primary long enough to get this kind of "friendly fire" and indeed she was attacked more for being "a cop" than anything else by Bernie and Warren supporters.Hence in a general election she hasn't had to deal with this most other of political tars. The cries of "communist" slide right off of her even if they do alliterate with her name.HRC called Obama a "community organizer" it was her last and most vicious salvo in the primary. It nearly worked.

And then even in winning it was a label Obama has always avoided ever since. "community organizer" ought to be a compliment. But, that's not what HRC was evoking when she brought it out. Democrats can't avoid primaries forever. I hope they never fight each other like that again.

To be clear there are also reasons that are very much his fault and I have things to say about THAT too. But, HRC's "racially tinged" typecasting efforts did not help.

@futurebird I just hope people learn to show up for the primaries, because they're so damn easy to manipulate because nobody's there to be the counterweight to corporate.People do feel disappointed some progressive gets primaried, but only after it already happened. But I've been hoping that for a long time, already.

@futurebirdI had only been in the US for 1.5-2 years back then. I was actually canvassing for that election, on a work permit. Which was uh problematic with a Russian accent lol... The fact that "community organizer" wasn't a compliment went entirely over my head. Until just now.

@futurebird I was just thinking the other day that the Democrats need to really reform the primary process, because it’s clearly not leading to the best GE candidates anymore. I’m not sure how, though. Make it all ranked choice? Is that even feasible?

@uq Make it much shorter and closer to the general election. Have the country vote over just 4 days with multiple states per day. (To increase turnout have mail in voting for two weeks prior.)Ranking could also help.

@uq The root of the issue has been the desire of party insiders to guide the process and not embrace whoever is popular with ... you know the Democrats who vote. There is a notion that if the "rabble" (that's me) picks it'll be someone too left and "unelectable"

@futurebird I often wondered where that fear came from. It’s not like any of the last few Dem nominees that lost were super left wing. I also wonder if this is one of the reasons Kamala is so popular. She’s actually willing to fight for what she believes in instead of slumping back into whatever the focus group says.

@futurebird if I had my way we’d never have primaries again, the campaign would always be three months long and consist mostly of the convention and buffoonish clips of the opposing ticket’s vice president trying to act human
