The things we call "debates" aren't exactly debates, they are more like "vibe checks" -- to me what wins in this context is being the person who speaks to the people more than they speak to the other person. That can be done by narrating what your opponent is doing to the people, or just talking to all of us watching directly. The trap is being drawn in to trying to "get at" the other person, because that means they have already gotten to you.

@futurebird I miss the old debates moderated by the League of Women Voters, where candidates were forced to actually discuss their positions on policy, and the moderators were not media toadies trying to sell advertising.

@futurebird This is an outstanding point and I do hope they capitalize on it. "The royal We" is something Trump would've benefited greatly from learning how to wield properly and because he can't - like I don't think his mind lets him think in terms of a collective - it'll be a huge advantage Harris will have in front of him.

@futurebird I don't know what qualifies as 'winning' but the only certainty I can give is that everyone watching them is losing something."Don't listen to what they say or - better yet - assess them on what they've actually done, mark how they perform." The worst format for deciding anything about politics. You'd achieve as much by having the candidates parade around in a bikini and high heels while holding a number and forcing a smile.Dismal stuff.
