At a NC rally an attendee was overcome by heat. Trump fans are celebrating that Trump stopped the rally & left his bullet proof glass box to check on the situation. This story is a contrast to stories earlier in the summer where people passed out from heat and Trump did nothing.Right wing outlets are highlighting this moment. The bullet proof glass and the careful way that Trump is watching the crowds is more evidence that the shooting had some impact on him.

The optics of being a candidate in a glass box, separated from the people, protected while they remain unprotected (remember someone died that day-- ) are obvious and terrible.It was interesting to me how many of the people discussing the person who collapsed mentioned Trump "leaving his box" with admiration. There is a general sense that "the left" is out to get Trump and he is still in danger: despite the shooter being a right winger.There are even terrible songs about it.

It would be helpful and turn down the political heat if Trump made some comments about how he understands that the shooter isn't part of some vast plot from "the other side" to destroy him. This is how many of his fans see it. That's dangerous.Sadly, there isn't any political hay to be made over such a gesture to help keep everyone in the country further from confusion and violence. Is the glass box performative? Prudent? The choice of a man changed by a brush with death?

Every indictment.Every mean joke by a politician are seen as part of a larger plot to destroy Trump because "they" don't want you to be free. They are out to get him (and you) and by still running what a magnificent sacrifice Trump is making!This sense of persecution can act as justification for not playing fair. It's how fake electors, and those plotting to stalk people at the polls justify their actions. Many people are being made to feel cornered.

Although many have forgotten about the assassination attempt it remains a very vivid moment for MAGA folk. It did not become a pivotal moment for the electorate but it may yet play a pivotal role in the violence that none of us want to see in coming months. Can't we just have an election? Count the votes? Accept whoever may win?There is a notion that only through an election can we end this ugly era in our politics. But I wonder if even an election will suffice.

@HumToTable I find it somewhat calming that this is seen through a humane lens. But, also it's shown me that MAGA is more keyed up than I suspected. I find the way that they talk about the assassination attempt as Democrats, or Harris, or Biden or The Deep State trying to kill Trump very disturbing. Most people don't see it that way, but those who do are in a very bad place.

@futurebird I am immensely worried about violence after Harris wins the election.I'm not sure all the ducks are lined up in a row for violence quite as strongly as they were in 2021, but I just find it hard to believe that the MAGA crowd are going to go quietly.

@futurebird I suspect he's not actually sure he still wants the job, but is trapped and can't see a way out of it.The way his crowds take *any* action as evidence of "doing the right thing" and cause for celebration is scary.And those crowds have been indoctrinated to believe that any election he loses is evidence of fraud.I am likewise concerned that an election won't be enough to stave off a violent resolution of their grievances.

@futurebird I fear we will need the full involvement of the national guard this time, and I deeply hope they use appropriate restraint. The true believer fringe's energy hasn't diminished like the rest of their party. We need protection without creating any martyrs.As for me, I will accept whatever comes, though I can think of one result that would leave me sobbing in a pillow. Let's avoid that outcome if possible.
