The fact Akram Atallah implemented this TLD change to ICANN only to the become the CEO of one of the first (and only) companies to make profit off of this change isn't some hidden knowledge, he's proudly stating he did this on his LinkedIn. “expanding the Internet's Top Level Domains from 21 [...] to over 1,200 across the globe.”264 of which (30% of all available TLDs) owned by his company. Nothing bad happened here, folx.

You don't know how deep the rabbit hole goes. Half Oak, Knob Town, June Maple, and Atomic Madison LLC are one of the many (over 200) shell companies Donuts Inc., or later Identity Digital, founded in order to bypass some ICANN limit. Nowadays the ownership of the TLDs these shell companies purchased was transferred to either “Binky Moon LLC” or “Dog Beach LLC” (Source), which can all be seen when viewing historic records of ICANN's TLD Database, as well as this document. It's truly a crazy story which I've looked into years back when a buddy of mine and I worked on TheInternetPortal. There's surely a lot more to discover if people dig deeper ;)

@ErikUden I ended up talking about the standardization processes of HDMI, DP, Bluetooth, BLE, Zigbee and 802.11 today, this sounds like just my topic for a birthday party :'-)

@ErikUden fwiw, I would guess that the per-zone shell companies were done for legal portability / compartmentalization purposes. E.g. to let Donuts more easily sell or transfer specific zones to other registries. One of the Donuts co-founders (Nevett) is a lawyer, and lawyers love compartmentalization.
