did anyone ever make a parallel port mouse?or do I need to spend a few hours building some bad hardware and hacking on the source of cutemouse?

@foone yes I have a coworker who worked on these, but apparently there's some horrible windows driver gotcha that horks the latency unless you do weird magic knocks? I don't recall the details and am on vacation and can't check though.

@foone (directly writes cursor position to memory shared by the driver)

@foone I'd almost expect a SCSI mouse before I'd expect a parallel mouse. Saw plenty of serial, proprietary card, and PS/2 mice, but I don't think I ever saw a parallel port mouse.

@foone No, all the port mouses I know of have been tangential to each other.

@foone @synackpse that's why you can have up to 3 parallel ports!

@foone As I recall that was called a "bus mouse" which brought out 2 quadrature lines for each ball sensor (4 wires) and two buttons lines (2 wires). Total of 6 lines. (presumably you could add another quadrature pair for a wheel but that hadn't happened yet). Again, VERY OLD neurons, this may have also been the 'track ball' standard from the minicomputer industry which had similar signalling.
