the funny thing about this computer? it's one of the first ones I've seen at ewaste that has CLEARLY been opened up to take the hard drive out.why is that funny? it doesn't have a hard drive. This is a solid state/floppy PC, no hard drive included.

So this was a computer designed for people who just needed something cheap to do word processing and the like. The details on the specs are rare, but apparently it has 5 megabyte of ROM, 4 megabyte of RAM, and 1 megabyte of flash storage. Since this is the NB-80C, it's got a 10.4" 640x480 color LCD. (the NB-60 has a 9.4" 640x480 greyscale LCD)

@fooneI vaguely remember seeing these in stores like Staples years ago. I think even Epson produced one, but I might be misremembering that one. I think they were targeted towards parents who wanted a computer for their kids or soon to be collage kids, that also couldn't play games.

@foone ah, memories! GEOS was my the first gui environment i had much exposure to. i liked that mouse pointer so much i later recreated it when running windows 3.1 so i wouldnt have to use its one with the wonky shaft.i also fondly remember the tear-off menus in GeoWorks apps: i loved how i could bring tools of submenus out of the menu bar for convenience when using them a bunch, and then dismiss them when no longer useful. i _still_ miss that flexibility when using modern windows and macos.

@foone I had one of those! It required a separate driver in order to run on Windows... I think...Don't trust me too much it's been MULTIPLE decades since I last used it.

@foone @thejpster according to us patent 5920734, a prior art system has power come from 232 rts or ps/2 power, gnd from the obvious, and the adapter loops ps/2 clk back to ps/2 data so the mouse knows what to do; in the novel system, part of the power comes from txd (negative) or one of the ps/2 pins (positive), and the improvement is that the 232 adapter doesn't need to short any lines together

@foone what is this GEOS 3.0? I still remember GeoWorks Ensemble being heralded by some people as a Windows competitor, but this looks like it must have predated it. Wikipedia speaks of 16-bit PC/GEOS as if it started with Ensemble, and doesn't mention this.

@foone Nokia used Geos on their early Communicator phones too. I think until 9210. It was neat to break one into command.com too. Also managed to get a Linux kernel running, but the keyboard had something funky in those and it only worked over serial connection.
