Our roof garden has provided food that we can survive on for dozens of minutes if not even hours! Pica is not impressed. (if we scaled things up this could be real food! We have a whole roof and only planted a few pots and didn’t work very hard. )

@futurebird Are those pole beans? I've grown them and it's easy to see how fairy tales are inspired, in a warm climate they climb fast and high.

@futurebird When I was a little kid, my Uncle Jimmy (who was living at my grandparents house at the time) had a HUGE outdoor container garden, using old steel drums and the tubs from old wringer washers. He was crippled by arthritis, unable to bend his knees or stand up straight, he pushed supplies around on an old lawnmower deck. He grew the most amazing vegetables of all kinds, and he loved exotic stuff. I especially remember the okra and the "yard long" green beans.

@jayalane @futurebird A couple summers ago I was left caring for my retired parents' garden while they went to the seaside. Having a full time job, I literally didn't have the any way to handle all the produce, especially the zucchini, except by offloading some to relatives and neighbours.

@chris_hayes @futurebird @jayalane The thing about zucchini is smaller is tastier and more tender. When people have monster zuchs it's because they were missed under the plant or something and allowed to overgrow. Those things are only good for zucchini bread or something.

@futurebird @jayalane I recommend the flower of the zucchini plant. Here it's considered a delicacy, and used in many traditional dishes, most of them very simple (I consider a risotto, or a frittata, to be simple, as a reference), or to add taste when cooking the zucchini. When I was abroad I noticed people would throw them away.

@arclight @jayalane Ah yes the old saying that everyone knows. As has been said many times:"Victory isn't sweetest when you simply dodge their zucchinis, no, victory is sweetest when you make them feast on the bread of their own zucchinis and hear them say thank you."Just like my great gramma always said.

@ersatzmaus @arclight @jayalane Yes! A game where you keep getting zucchinis from your garden (die roll for each garden plot) and have to give zucchinis away and only win when you have none. Bread-backing, cat bites, and sneaky composting all have risks (if you are caught composting everyone gets to give you a zucchini since you are clearly in need)It could have fun stackable game pieces...

@futurebird @arclight @jayalane In 1986 we moved to a midsized town in Saskatchewan because my partner had a new job. One day she came home with two gourds, each about 50 cm (18") long and said her coworker had given her these zucchinis.I searched every cookbook we had for zucchini recipes, and finally found a recipe for chocolate cake. It called for six zucchinis. WTF? That is going to be a LOT of cake!Later learned that zucchini should be harvested at 15 cm, and that made a lot more sense.

@futurebird @ersatzmaus @arclight @jayalane We have a variant going on with cucumbers. I planted all of the old seeds from the last 8 years and what came up? Cucumbers. Sometimes they get missed and also went were away for 5 days and got a boat-load of rain. Huge cumbers. We classify them by size, A-cumbers, B-cumbers, lots of Z-cumbers.We are coping by feeding them to the guinea pig, he will eat the skin first, leaving this foot-long, pale thing for us to compost.

@futurebird @jayalane at one point we had zucchini plants in our garden. We reached a point where we were pondering whether zucchini ice-cream is doable, because we've had zucchini in about every other form we could think of, and there was still plenty to use up.IIRC in one of Alf episodes there was a scene where neighbours visited, and were asked for a favour. "Uh, sure?" "Please take some zucchini!"

@jayalane@futurebird Cucumbers are almost as prolific as zucchini but you can make pickles with the excess bounty.Presumably you could make zucchini pickles too, but I've never heard of such a thing, which means they're probably extremely unappetizing.
