while attempting (and failing) a unix pipeline, I accidentally filled up my root partition with a 105 gigabyte file named "-"

@foone That's also a great practical interview Q - "how do you remove this?" to see if they either know about shell escapes or -- command line options

@foone Due to a similar failure I once managed to name a file "*" on a production system. I think I did that in /etc

@foone That moment of "huh...this is taking longer than I thought, should I be worried...?" is quite a moment.

@foone been there fond that. Although my tour de force still has to be the slight lingering on the shift key that left me with a home directory empty except a 0 byte file called txtrm -f *>txt

@foone every now and then I start typing thinking I'm still in my 20s and Input a space where it shouldn't be, and then I need to write a one liner to clean the mess...I feel your pain

@foone I do love a good "command line argument accidentally became a file"

@foone my absolute favorite is adding a local debug feature to my emulators using fopen("debug.txt","a+"), write a text line with all registers values and fclose(). It brings any computer to its knees. You'll enjoy a hundred megabytes log file to analyze, and the delight of waiting 8 seconds for the Close button to react.

@fooneI feel you, I've more than once filled a file in /mnt with gigabytes of a boot image with dd, because the usb drive wasn't connected *at that exact time* 🤦♂️

@foone if it is on an SSD you should do fstrim/discard, else your disk may die quite soon.
