@nyrath This is part of why I hate Star Wars so much: it just sucked all the attention towards its frankly terrible franchise, leaving no space for much else.

@tkinias @nyrath There's other big franchises, though ... Doctor Who, Star Trek, Gundam, etc ...While B5 was airing there was a bigger huger epic long running series which - to be honest - spoiled me and made me enjoy B5 less because it did many of the same things so much better. Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu would go on for four seasons, numerous movies and further series ... even a modern reboot. It's not all Star Wars at all.But my favorite franchise on a meta level is ...1/2

@tkinias @nyrath ... the Terminator franchise.Basically, the continued existence of this franchise ever since T2 is hilarious to me on a meta level. It IS The Terminator. It absolutely will not stop. Ever.More or less no installment of The Terminator since T2 has been accepted by the fans. No one wants more of this stuff. Yet it just keeps on picking itself back up and keeps coming at us with more.2/2

@nyrath The other, more recently killed off epic sci-fi series that deserved far more was... The Peripheral

@isaackuo yeah, I wasn’t thinking exclusively in terms of effects on B5—and to be honest manga/anime just wasn’t on my radar at all, so I never thought of it as being in the same genre space as other sfit’s more about the huge cultural dominance of SW since the 2000s, and how so much of the public thinks it’s the beginning and end of SF that isn’t Star Trek—that’s what pushed me from ‘meh, not really my thing’ to really active antipathy@nyrath

@tkinias @isaackuo Well, I got hooked on scifi when I read H. G. Well's War of the Worlds when I was seven years old. I devoured scifi novels and adored movies like Forbidden Planet. What I didn't like was being put down as a geeky nerd who was into that crazy outer space Buck Rogers stuff.I was grateful that the first Star Wars movie made scifi mainstream.I was *not* grateful at the new wave of ignorant fans who were under the delusion that Star Wars *invented* scifi.

@nyrath I disagree with the author, as Babylon 5 was killed mostly by politics inside Warner. JMS had noted often that there were high level execs who actively hindered distribution. Otherwise B5 could have been like the Stargate franchise, say. The author is not really all that informed. It's more an opinion than actual analysis.
