It’s a brisk cool morning in the lovely South Bronx & the ants who live in the strawberry pot in our roof garden are moving slowly. (same same, girls) These are pavement ants (Tetramorium sp.) When I repotted this plant I saw their queen & managed to save her & rehome her. I gave her a cricket leg, since then they have been thriving. There was a violent thunderstorm and my sweet husband asked “should we bring the strawberry ants inside?🥺” But of course they are fine— they were made for this.

Also, when I repotted the plant I added extra drainage holes so their nest wouldn't flood. They do a good job patrolling the strawberries, although they do like to pull the seeds off of the over-ripe ones. What I need are ants that can scare away the birds and chipmunks. How is there so much wildlife up here on the 8th floor????

Here is a video from earlier this summer when this colony was much smaller and I got to see their queen. I imagine they have an extensive palace for her deep in that pot. https://sauropods.win/@futurebird/112507896447358134

How would you feel about thunderstorms if rain drops were bigger than you?

@futurebird Being so small that you carry home strawberry seeds for your baby sisters is really charming.

@futurebird I've never been there, but it is my personal opinion that Panama and the western coast of Colombia have weather that is essentially indistinguishable from "raindrops as big as me". See also, Cherrapunji, on the slopes of the eastern Himalayas in India.

@futurebird I have read that story - actually, several such stories. The science fiction author Hal Clement liked the plot device of very large raindrops and used it in his novels "Close to Critical" and "Still River".

@futurebird So Pretty! Holldobler & Wilson was a really important book for me. And you should make an effort to track down and read Walter Tschinkel's _The Fire Ants ( Belknap Press, Cambridge, 2006) Extremely fun.
