Absolutely disgusting. Conda is 99.99% free software!Tell your friends to *never* use the anaconda distribution, but instead the FLOSS conda system with conda-forge. They're not the same thing!https://www.theregister.com/2024/08/08/anaconda_puts_the_squeeze_on/

@tiago I think it is reasonable for them to charge for access to their repositories. They are well curated, and that takes work. We have been paying for the past few years. However, this year, they removed the #Anaconda Professional tier that we were on that just gave permission to use their infrastructure. We have had to move up to the Anaconda Business tier that includes lots of features that we don't need and costs more than 5x as much. I don't think that is reasonable.

@tiago I've had a deep distrust of Anaconda the software for a long long time.I've installed it a handful of times and each time it has messed with parts of my systems in which it has no business, forcing complete re-installs.I won't run anything that relies on it, and while that means I can't run some software, life is easier.

@volcan01010 It's *NOT* reasonable in the slightest to shakeup academic institutions for more cash, specially after *altering* the original deal.I don't care how well they are "curated", they rely on massive volumes of free and open source software, developed and distributed under a completely different philosophy.I never have, nor I will ever consider paying even a penny to them.

@zl2tod @tiago > FLOSS conda system with conda-forgeIs there a good resource that explains where the boundary is? Currently I'm using #miniconda with #conda-forge, but miniconda's page does refer to this "small organisation" limit.#anaconda #python

@cyclotopie @zl2tod @tiago https://prefix.dev/blog/towards_a_vendor_lock_in_free_conda_experience has a good summary. The key is the “defaults” channel, which the miniconda installer enables by default, but the miniforge installer does not. All of this can be changed by your conda config after install, but if you use miniconda with conda-forge, starting with the miniforge installer is simplest.

@tiago I don't approve of their current behaviour and the aggressive tactics. But they are hosting infrastructure that allows thousands (millions?) of people around to access packages, including compatible binary builds for their operating system. They can't be expected to do that for free.

@volcan01010 Hosting is solved without compromising core free software values for every single FLOSS operating system out there (Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch, etc) which have many more users than anaconda. The companies (e.g. canonical, red hat) that contribute to this infrastructure (beside volunteers) do not do it “for free”. The model is not to charge for access, but for customer support, consulting, etc.

@tiagoThere's been some discussion of this over here:https://mastodon.world/@vicgbuswell/112932270047167929Some parts of that article are a bit confusing.
