@DMA One of the nuclear plant workers in Chernobyl. I only caught that line during a recent rewatch, the made up female nuclear physicist is interviewing the witnesses to construct a timeline of the disaster and referring to a key witness casually drops, 'His face was gone.'I suspect it's the one who was forced at gunpoint to check the state of the reactor from the roof, he stared into the open core blasting out cherenkov radiation and in seconds his face had turned red.Did this happen in real life? Probably.

@judgedread @DMA The most likely radiation to cause death for those who flew over the exposed reactor core was hard gamma and fast neutron radiation straight from the core.The Cherenkov EM radiation is due to a charged particle (ex. beta radiation) moving faster than the wavelength speed of light (not the speed of the photon) in a medium. It's the EM version of the sonic boom.

@DMA Radiation is no more a poison than temperature is. Visible light is a type of EM radiation. Sunlight is radiation. Sunlight that won't kill a human, can kill a termite.A warm stove is just warm. A hot stove will burn you.

I get burned often baking. As a child had radiation therapy for my thyroid gland . Dr would explain a little is okay. More than normal toxic to us. I understand. Exposure and dosage is key.

@DMA Gamma and X-ray radiation are forms of light.Beta+- (Leptons) and alpha radiation (He nuclei) are charged particles that can add lots of heat to atoms and strip valence electrons, causing chemical reactions.Enough fast neutron radiation can embrittle metals, because the neutrons literally knock metal atoms out of alignment with the metallic crystal lattice. Certain elements are vulnerable to absorbing a neutron, then turning into a radioactive isotope (ex. Co-60)
