I hate how CAD and computer graphics generally mean that almost no one makes excellent drafting compasses anymore. What about a titanium drafting compass... a parallel compass with a beam. Is it too much to ask?

@futurebird It's almost like I lived in mythical times, where I saw a certified architect draw a blueprint.Like with pens, on a big table with a large sheet of paper stuck to it.It's harder, slower, far less forgiving with errors, but it *worked* and people did that for centuries.I can't help but feel a sense of loss even though I fully understand why the switch to electronic versions happened.

@futurebird I have a bit of a penchant for such tools as well - I bought two of these sets of old-timey drawing compasses sourced from an East-German school (one for myself & one for my daughter) & also have one of those drafting tables with a ruler on an architect's lamp-like arm, awesomely called "Robotron" - I rarely use either but I love having them 😁

@futurebird TWW: Teach others the knowledge of things you know and allow them to discover the power of learning that made you able to know of these things. Let them explore the moment in their own sense of learning so they begin to feel the strength and oneness with the moment that it can bring to them. *Even today as a retired M Shipwright I sometimes help students learn the classic methods of lofting and offsets it takes to design boats or make repairs. Enjoy your skills. OWOP

@futurebird I briefly worked at an architects firm for a couple of months the in the early 2000s as work experience; all but one draftsman used software. The old school guy was amazing to watch. He seemed surprised at how interesting I found his work but I loved seeing how he did things and the tools he used.

@futurebird For large diameters Starrett still makes a trammel (but for low precision a string with a pencil is far cheaper than $424).https://www.starrett.com/details?cat-no=59F

@justafrog @futurebird Drafting was taught in the graphic arts class I took in jr high. Although I'm not an architect, I do still use the skills I learned. And yeah... that was nearly 40 years ago.

@futurebird Old graphic designer dog here. I still own equipment that I bought for college and that you can’t buy anymore, at least not in that quality. The obvious one being a really decent compass. The other one being a brass knive with a blade that lasts more than a lifetime. Sorry for the Pinterest link, but the source is 404. https://www.pinterest.de/pin/397935317071130669/

@jwcph @futurebird Robotron was the GDR's electronic manufacturer, they built stuff like Z80 clones (KC 87) and PCs built with Russian 8086 clones. But also, inexplicably, cookie presses https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VEB_Robotron

@cfbolz @futurebird Yup, that's it - same logo 😊 Probably comes from the same school; it bought it from the same place as the compasses (though not at the same time). Their main business is recycling building materials but since that gets them involved in a lot of teardowns they often get their hands on all manner of weird stuff, which they also sell - everything from lab beakers to the parquet flooring from a sports arena...

@futurebird I have many questions when looking at this mechanical marvel. and most of them start with "Why...".How is it even remotely possible to make any thing approacing accurately with this? It must be made from the most rigid material ever invented, that has since been lost to the ages.

@Melissabeartrix @cpm @futurebird I learned drafting in college. I can read blueprints and drawings for the most part and I know enough to be able to express myself. I rarely get to draw up plans anymore, but it's come in handy a few times. One thing I think physical drafting teaches you that learning just CAD doesn't is to vibe-check a design. I've been handed CAD designs which looked just fine but were impossible to build as drawn. I wouldn't have been able to physically draw them because they had subtle errors which the computer corrected for without the designer understanding how. Plus sometimes I get designs which involve angles so precise I have to laugh. No one can cut wood at a 75.392° angle.

@12thRITS About 8 years back they were easy to find, but as of late the prices have been going up and there are just fewer around to buy. I need to take better care of my collection. I think of them as tools, but they don't make these anymore. I can't buy a new one if I lose a part.

@futurebird I studied cartographic drafting at a trade school, just at the beginning of the CAD age. We learned to use wonderful tools like the railroad pen. It swiveled at the top, allowing you to ink parallel lines around curves. It worked, but was an utter monster to get set up.

@futurebird Nah, it was about 6" long. That's just the best image I could find. There was also a single swivel ruling pen called a "contour pen," for drawing, you guessed it, topographic contour lines.
