       Fantastic! Now “putsch" will enter the far right lexicon and join other words they don't actually know the meaning of -- right along with "Marxist" and "commie.”https://www.nytimes.com/2024/08/17/opinion/election-dnc-convention.html

       @andrew Every person who takes offense on Biden's behalf: Trump, Dowd etc. tends to be... a person of privileged circles. They cannot view Biden's choice as his own. Which oddly would be something that would disqualify him from being president. Biden could have stayed in if he wanted. This was his choice.

       @andrew I will never understand the those who say that they found the moment after Trump was shot when he pumped his fist "cool" or "inspiring" -- And I'll never understand people who feel offense on Biden's behalf at what will be the defining moment of his political carrier seemingly wanting to rob him of the honor and maturity that moment represents. Their view of what it means to be a leader is alien to me.

       @andrew I think this shows who Dowd was really pulling for to win. Although she would never say so out loud since who'd invite her to NYC parties if she did?I wonder what is is that she likes about the idea of an America under Trump? The racism? or is it just about those taxes?

       @futurebird @andrew shot *at. I don't for a moment believe a bullet struck him.

       @futurebird @andrew You say "rascism"; Dowd hears "status guarantee".

       @futurebird @andrew I was in rural Virginia this weekend so of course I saw a Trump sign featuring Trump pumping his fist. No Harris signs but fewer Trump signs/flags than I expected.

       @futurebird Bit of both, I'd imagine. Throw in the pseudo-intellectual desire to be contrarian and a garbage moral compass.

       @futurebird On that particular front I think a lot of (toxic) "masculine" men have espoused him as some kind of pinnacle of manliness, in spite of his rallies being basically dance parties for 80s show tunes.They're all desperate for a story they can tell themselves and others that justifies their framing of him."He got shot and got right back up and pumped his fist in the air and said 'Fight! Fight! Fight!’" is that. Overstated and mostly BS? Absolutely. But sounds great said quickly.

       @paulc @futurebird They were selling t-shirts with the picture in kiosks in our local mall about 24 hours after he got scared out of his shoes.

       @andrew @paulc I do get the sense he's not as willing to do public events in less controlled spaces now. Which is understandable. It must have been very scary. It could have been a moment to learn something... to grow... but they were so focused on the political capital they thought such an event ought to entitle them to they never paused to reflect on its meaning: that we are a nation where this is just part of life, and even being wealthy can't totally keep you safe. Is it worth it?

       @futurebird @paulc I agree.Worth it for him, now? Maybe.I think he sees losing this election as an existential threat to his freedom. Obviously he doesn't want to get seriously injured in the process, but my guess would be that he figures if he can Pope-mobile himself and win that's the best of both worlds. Its the Tragedy of the Commons. MAGA ratcheting up of violent rhetoric has political benefits that accrue just to them, while the costs are borne by all of us.

       @futurebirdThe reason I'm angry is because he was forced to make the decision. I don't believe he bowed out because he thought he wasn't up for the job. He bowed out to keep the Democratic Party from tearing itself apart. He bowed out because he had no support from his party. I'm impressed with the way he's handled it. I'm angry he didn't get support for the same policies Harris *will* get support for. I'm angry voters want celebrities and just couldn't make one out of him.

       @cshlan Dowd wants democrats to fail.
