Why is it that every single cat manages to have their own neurotic, strange, little personality that is nothing like any other cat?I've met a lot of dogs, and they can be different and have personalities, but there is much less... diversity.

@futurebird That’s one of the things I most like about cats. They are just creative and inventive enough (and maybe most crucially, independent enough) that they all just end up figuring out “how to be a cat” in their own way.

@futurebird That's because dogs love us unconditionally whereas cats, on certain days, would kill us and eat us if they could.

@futurebird I think it smarts. Dogs regulate themselves to our moods and thus standout less while cats basically be cats and stand out more.

@futurebird cats evolved to have a wide variety of personalities in order to have a wide variety of tactics and strategies available for manipulating humans when humans came to the local cat colony to purchase rodent control services.

@jamatex @futurebird You seem to have had limited cat and dog experience. Dogs may tend to want to please more, but cats are also smart and affectionate. Some of their personalities are likely shaped by the expectations of their humans. "Cats are more aloof," so leave them more often or let them roam outdoors. Dogs are trained more, so learn obedience.

@CStamp @futurebird True. I maybe intelligence = obedience. Maybe dogs were seen as more dangerous or usefully because of their size, especially for hunting and security. This might have lead people to breed them for obedience. Cats were basically pest control and remained more wild.

@futurebird @WAHa_06x36 @jamatex @CStamp Not too long ago I saw a toot that said it was typed with the author's left hand. The right hand was not available for use because a cat was lying on it — as the accompanying image illustrated. And the author didn't want to disturb the cat. If that isn't domestication, what would you call it?

@futurebird Did you ever spend a day at the dog station of a animal rescue shelter? 😉 As dogs build a pack with their people like wolves do, it's not quite easy to recognise the personality behind the social role. But even wolves have that diversity. But lets talk about ants' personalities. 😁

@futurebird @WAHa_06x36 @CStamp Assuming domesticate means teach to live within a limited space acting as placed habitation, I think it goes both ways. Human could not live in houses without pest control thanks to cats n cats wouldn't have found such inept species on their own. What surprises me is that humans didn't just find more efficient means of breeding rats.It could be that they tried n got hot hit by bubonic plague and hence the need for cats.Or rat pop growth is too high to control.
