@BrodieOnLinux When I was a kid, I would turn on the subtitles of english shows to malay so I could learn english. That habit has never left me even with Youtube videos on English subs. However, I do avoid auto-generated subs because they can be inaccurate and disorientating.

@BrodieOnLinux Isn't the only reason to use subtitles for accessibility reasons? If I can't hear dialogue because it's mumbled or mixed poorly for TV speakers, subtitles help make the dialogue accessible to me.Maybe I'm missing something though.

On YT I don't, but whenever I play games or the few times I watch movies/TV shows in English, I always use subtitles (because I'm used to it from watching subbed anime, and audio mixing often sucks)CCs annoy me though, "[Literally any sound that isn't talking]" Yes, I know...

@BrodieOnLinux i use them as someone with audio processing issues. they also help keep my attention on the video when there’s not a lot going on visually, otherwise i tend to scroll through the comments and accidentally stop listening.for sure it is an accessibility thing, but not one people often mention or consider. :)

@BrodieOnLinux I live in an apartment so I prefer to have my volume turned kind of low so as not to disturb my neighbours. This means that if the video's speech is mixed kind of low as well it can be difficult to make out some things, so English subtitles always help.

@BrodieOnLinux I often use subtitles when I watch videos while doing something else, such as cooking, where outside noises could obscure words. The subtitles help feed the 'error correction machinery' in my brain enough so it feels as if I heard every word clearly. Usually the automatic ones are enough for that though.
