Are... ice baths tough guy stuff? I used to take those after my long runs on Sundays. I'd read the funny papers and it was great because it kept my poor little legs from hurting. I always felt like it was sad that I needed them? But now I keep seeing people acting like it's really tough to sit in an ice bath so your muscles don't hurt?Ice baths are for teachers who cry when ants get stepped on. Not tough at all. It's pain prevention because I hate pain so much and will cry.

I file ice baths in the same zone as being wrapped in a warm towel, or using a sleeping mask. (also great TBH)

@futurebird macho people gonna macho.I’ll happily sit in one for twenty minutes, but I don’t think it has anything to do with being tough or not.

@futurebird blame Wim Hof:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wim_Hof"As of March 2024 there are 32 reports of people allegedly dying in relation to the Wim Hof Method."the secret is not to be a middle aged man with a heart condition going through a midlife crisis and feeling the need to be "alpha" according to deranged meanssee also: eating raw liver, the "Liver King" influencerapparently only the manliest of insecure, sorry, i mean "alpha," men can eat raw liver, not women, it's just science (/s)

@futurebird I can recall just using cold water for a bath during a very hot summer. But an ice cold one? I give you mad props, myrmepropagandist! PS: A chilly feeling has just come over me…

@futurebird eons ago (early 70s) I used to run around with the cross country folks at Washington State University and it was common to ice our legs after a hard workout (up to about mid thigh). It was helpful to keep inflamation down.

@futurebird FWIW the hardest-core cold-plungers I know are a group of 35-75 year old women who swim in the river here all winter. They have a bubbler set up to keep a little area from freezing over.

@futurebird I find cold water immersion (e.g. ice baths, frigidarium, turning the shower on cold, etc) really startling, sometimes almost panic-inducing. So I wouldn't exactly call it a tough-guy thing, but for me it's definitely something more likely to MAKE me cry than keep me from it.

@futurebird I'm not a tough guy so I can't speak to that, but I am a former distance runner who took ice baths. The latest research says "inflammation after running is good actually, so don't take ice baths or ibuprofen unless you want comfort at the expense of speedy recovery".

@mogul That's really interesting. That makes it even less tough. It was effective at reducing pain, and making the recovery day a bit better.

@futurebird this feels like that thing where tough guys wear cramp-inducing devices to experience period cramps and think they can handle it no problem, but then immediately start writhing because they’ve never experienced that level of pain before

@futurebird dudes have a lower pain tolerance. An ice bath is definitely a challenge for me, and you sound like a badass doing them so casually 🤷

@futurebird It depends on the integrity of your nervous system. People who have less well regulated nervous systems will be more sensitive to it. The mild stress that happens during ice baths can be too much for a disorganized nervous systems. It’s also a form of exposure therapy to help strengthen weakened nervous systems, so it can be beneficial as well.

@futurebird it would cost me a lot of willpower. though i guess when it's ice baths or pain that changes it a bit, but I'd probably still be be a wussy about it 😅.

@futurebird There's the Orthodox christian custom of "diving for the cross", which turned into a macho fest (usually resulting in very memable photographs). There's also the northern european (Scandinavia, Russia, etc) use of sauna + running out in the snow / jumping in frozen rivers, but it's more of a "northerner", than a "macho" thing (given people of all ages and genders do it, like family fun).

@futurebird This *might* be related to Wim Hoff, a terrible man who liked being in cold water, and convinced lots of other people that being in cold water would make you immortal.https://www.iheart.com/podcast/105-behind-the-bastards-29236323/episode/part-one-wim-hofs-surprisingly-deadly-123041693/

@futurebird On the one hand, I get that ice baths reduce inflammation for sore, achy muscles. But on the other, isn’t that how most of the people on the Titanic died, from hypothermia caused by being in ice cold water for too long? I can never see someone in an ice bath without thinking that that’s crazy, death-defying behavior. To me, ice cold water is any water colder than body temperature.

@futurebird I will sometimes take lukewarm showers if I've been exercising or doing manual labor in the heat, but I can't do ice baths; they remind me of those times in the winter when my parents couldn't pay the gas bill for so long it got shut off and we didn't have hot water.
