I've got an old VIA Eden thin client motherboard that I've put in a MicroATX case with an LS120 drive and a DVD drive. Its primary use (for now) will be as an archiving machine.My plan is to mainly use it headless, normally over a network but with the option of using a serial console. This means that a GUI isn't essential, but CLI and TUI tools like dd, ddrescue and mc are. Tmux would be very handy, too.Bearing in mind this is a 32 bit machine, which OS would you pick?#NetBSD #Linux #32bit

This poll hasn't been up for long, but I've already noticed two things. - #NetBSD fans have come out IN FORCE.- I should have given #AlpineLinux its own option.Also, I'd love to hear why you've picked your OS/distro for my 32 bit archiving machine. Evangelise away!

@thelastpsion If the question is "which OS would *I* pick?" then my answer is Slackware. But that's my usual OS choice, whatever the parameters š.In some ways it might be a good fit: terminal friendly, with the command-line tools you mention. However, I can't guarantee that Slackware 15.0 works on VIA Eden (website seems to indicate that it works on 486, so if that's true, in theory it should be fine). Also, there's this thing where apparently some people don't like Slackware š¤·āāļø

@thelastpsion iād prefer to use Linux, but distros are beginning to drop 32-bit support so for updates in the long term NetBSD is a better choice. Iād worry about hardware failures and availability of spares and media for the LS-120.

@thelastpsion Whatever wins make sure you recap it before you do anything with it. Seriously the Eden boards were notorious for having bad caps on them.

@thelastpsion@xmanmonk I've got a 32 bit Toshiba Portege M200 running debian 12 bookworm, works great except the Nvidia driver isn't supported anymore

@Vaneshi That's a really good tip, thank you! I'll take a good look at the board and make a BOM.

@DrHyde The LS120 will only be doing reading. Archiving will be to modern storage, probably over a network. I'm considering getting a USB3 PCI card for it, too, but they're expensive considering how much I'll use the machine.

@semiprime @thelastpsion For the record, I did install Slackware on a VIA motherboard a while ago, and it worked out of the box.

@ParadeGrotesque @semiprime I've haven't used Slackware since the 90s! I'm intrigued now.

@thelastpsion @semiprime It hasn't changed that much. If you install Slackware 15, the biggest differences is that it now uses postfix instead of sendmail, and it has PAM (with sane defaults, so you don't have to mess with it).So you are good to go!

12 hours into this poll and there are three strong contenders for my headless VIA Eden machine.- #NetBSD is *way* out in front- #AlpineLinux- #SlackwareAll three offer lightweight, rock-solid base systems. Honourable mentions to #Debian Bookworm and #OpenBSD.Someone has also recommended that I re-cap the Eden board, so I'm going to look into that too.

@thelastpsion there are upcoming changes to I386 on Debian that could lead to issues for non Intel/amd chips (im thinking if they don't have it they cant test it) https://www.theregister.com/2023/12/19/debian_to_drop_x86_32/ - that aside, what do you have in mind for the system?

@thelastpsion I would dual boot it with FreeDOS (and probably the quarterly update development branch) for some of those timing sensitive DOS disk imaging tools.

@thelastpsion NetBSD is a very good choice, although from the Linux distros side, there is one that is worth checking out: Voidhttps://voidlinux.org/
