Jesus. I want some work doing on the living room, so I’ve been getting quotes. A guy I’ve used before gave me a ball-park figure of £5000 about six months ago. I had a guy in earlier in the week, gave me slightly sketchy vibes, quoted me £1600 but excluding redecorating. Another guy today, £15,000! Guess I’d better chase the first guy and see if he wants the job….

@Flick Do you have references for them? Sometimes that can help explain their prices. Funny how things are way all over the place. My Mom needed the bathroom redone, first guy quoted her $20,000. Next guy quoted her $11,000 and another $7,500.

@LostInCalifornia Yeah but no but. Ignoring sketchy guy, reliable-for-small-jobs guy is an all-rounder handyman: expensive guy is a specialist in Stuff My House Has. I don’t want to have to re-do every five years due to unresolved Stuff. And I think we have crossed wires that will — when uncrossed — bring the quote down. We’ll see.
