Trump has been talking about immigration in increasingly outrageous terms he claims: * Undocumented immigrants are causing crime* Undocumented immigrants are getting social security benefits.* Undocumented immigrants are replacing "your children" in schoolsHe also says:* He will begin mass deportations on inauguration day "at noon" Democrats mostly say "we are tough on the border too" if that's all they say his claims stand unquestioned.

Undocumented immigrants are issued "tax ID" numbers in many states, these are similar to social security numbers, but do not allow them in the program. What they do is ensure that immigrants pay taxes on their income. I assume this is the "nugget of truth" in the social security claim.Undocumented immigrants reduce the overall crime rate per/capita because they commit far fewer crimes than citizens. No one is getting replaced at school.

Now you might ask: "why would states have an orderly legal process for people who are in this country illegally to pay taxes?" This is because large sectors of the economy (people who own companies) are dependent on their labor. Trump claims he will deport all of these people even as he is supported by wealthy people from these sectors of the economy. Something isn't adding up, don't you think?

@waitworry That's how he said it. It's a vague phrase that you can fill in with whatever you want. That's part of the point.

@futurebird One of the many absurd and evil parts of US immigration law is that it makes immigrants get tax ID numbers or else face the threat of never being able to get legal status. This means they must pay taxes, but are ineligible for the benefits they fund (SS, Medicare, etc.).I got certified in immigration law in 2017, and the more I learned, the clearer it became the point is to have a perpetual source of abusable underclass laborers.

@Azuaron And Trump is claiming they are collecting social security. It's a struggle to do that if you are a citizen with all your documents in a row. On no planet is that happening. It's so false I don't know where to start.

@futurebird That's always been part of the Republican message about immigrants, at least in my lifetime. That they're "leeches on the welfare state", despite reality. What's surprising is that his funders think either:1. He's not going to do it and this is just political rhetoric.2. American laborers are abusable enough to replace the lost migrant labor without increasing wages.

@futurebird I assume they intend to operate like the Nazis and use enslaved labour. They intend to use children and people so impoverished they are grateful to be exploited and abused, and are already. No unions, slave labour from increasing numbers of incarcerated people and child labour is their wet dream.

@futurebird i wonder... less tax revenue-> less funding for regulatory bodies and enforcement, enabling them to squeaze labor even harder, more opportunities for profit windfalls, and the mechanisms are abstracted enough we don't think about it?but im dumb so idk

@fifilamoura Yeah. This. "mass deportation" isn't really a thing. It just can't be done. So prison labor.

@futurebird Just make some estimates of the cost to round up millions of people, salaries of the agents, costs to detain them, and the sheer number of bus trips needed. The cost would be astronomical, and that's on top of the billions he also wants to spend on a wall. All that is without the economic cost of removing those workers. These are empty promises that appeal to racism instead of economics, and the racists don't care if it adds up.

@futurebird The less access to legal recourse irregular migrants have, the easier it will be to force them to accept low wages and bad conditions. That's why people using that labour pool are fond of anti-immigrant talk. It's not to throw them out, it's to keep them down."Be good, or I'll feed you to ICE!"

@justafrog But they have been doing that for decades, using anti-immigrant talk exactly as you describe to enlist useful idiots in keeping that sector of the labor market inexpensive and to keep wages for everyone depressed. And the people who have grown up with the fear of migrant caravans have noticed that nothing changes. So, Trump who *says* he will do "mass deportation now" has them very excited. This is why this was a bad idea from go.

@futurebird He never keeps his promises, though.I'm sure he *will* make ICE and CBP even worse, with more people and less restraint. But he'll just yeet 500 people over the border in front of a camera, yell "Mission Acchomlished!" and move on to a new topic. And people will move along with him. They always do.

@justafrog If we end up there I hope so. Thing about that project 2025 is it has the plans for doing all of these things. Or at least an outline for them and some of the people behind it sincerely want to make this a (white) "Christian Nation"

@futurebird Yeah, it would be better if we don't get to see how serious they are this time.Or, like, never at all.I don't think they're competent, but that doesn't stop them from ruining millions of people's lives.

@futurebird 🤔 Golly! I wonder why the employers of undocumented workers are never penalized? Because neither party really wants to disrupt the flow of exploitable cheap labor. They both want to preserve the status quo.

@futurebird imprison them and then loan them out as slave labor?
