Never knew designing a stove could be so complex. We were griping about touch controls yesterday... but a lot of people pointed out advantages of touch controls mainly:* easier to clean* can be easier to press under some circumstances and for some users. At the same time blind people, me, and tactile feedback enjoyers hate them. I think at least part of my dislike of touch controls comes from experiences with poorly calibrated sensors with bad debouncing and keypress software.

@futurebird there was, at one point, microfluidic tech to give some texture to touch buttons, possibly even implementing braille for them. It never took off

Basically it would be very hard to design a stove (for example) that meets all of these considerations at once. Touch controls are less expensive to manufacture, so they end up in a lot of cheap products. Often without much consideration for how difficult those products may be to use.

@lyda Can you link to the product? I don't know if I've ever seen anything like that.

@futurebird Well put. The membrane control panel is the only quibble I have against our induction range; we're used to exquisite sensitivity on our self-phone screens and the membrane just doesn't compare. Also, having to reach above a pot of boiling water to poke at the panel is sub-par.That's a design consideration I wish I had thought of when I was purchasing. I'd go with a front panel with rotary knobs if there's ever a next time.

@futurebird Count me in - I hate touch controls with the fire of a thousand angry suns. Maybe I have weird fingers but almost every single touch interface I try to use spends half the time ignoring me. Thankfully my current phone is mostly (!) OK but if I pick up an iPhone? Forget it - nothing works & I'm tapping away like a demented woodpecker. Hardware buttons, switches & knobs, please.

@futurebird Another other type of easy to clean control that comes to mind is the flexible membrane with bubbles over physical switches. These are fine until the membrane cracks, which it always does sooner or later.

@futurebird I've actually had touchscreen advocates insist that debouncing is totally unnecessary for touch screens. Let's just say I'm skeptical of that claim.

@futurebird I’m quite mixed on the touch controls on my induction range. The main time I hate it is when the semi-horizontal panel gets wet and no longer functions. Unfortunately while cooking it’s easy to get that panel wet. Sometimes you really need to do something fast, like turn down high heat, and it won’t respond when wet. Have to yank the pot/pan off the burner and then deal with the wet panel situation.

@futurebird the traditional control is a cheap membrane keypad. The one on our dishwasher even has slight tactile feedback.

@futurebird Was on a small boat (visiting a lighthouse) and the captain was complaining about the UI for the radar, which was a touchscreen, and... didn't work if your hands were wet. Oops.

@rationaldoge @futurebird I consider front panel unsafe. It's within reach of small children, pets. Yes I know it's also an accessibility criterion for some users, but IMO it should only be installed where a user has that need.

@dalias @rationaldoge @futurebird Well there's also some where the stove panel is at the top rather than at the front.

@futurebird I have a GE Cafe range, with a touchscreen for oven control. There's no straightforward way to disable the glass touchscreen, so cleaning it results in randomly activating functions (there's apparently no key-jam detection to ignore multiple touches). There is zero tactile feedback, just high pitched, low volume beeps.

@futurebird Having had experience of a cooker with touch controls we will pay extra for the knobs we can rotate next time.

@lanodan @dalias @rationaldoge @futurebird that's hard to reach for short people (assuming this is like near the fan sort of top not like "the steam is hitting your fingertips as you manipulate the controls" top)but then short people are also prejudiced by controls on the back (in addition to the scalding)...

@apophis @dalias @rationaldoge @futurebird Top as in side of the pots, which is also what you have on all the induction stoves I've ever seen (and most use capacitive touch so you can't turn it off while wearing gloves, great design there…).
