It makes me SO MAD that the USDA permits for shipping live ants have to say "Permit to Move Plant Pests, Noxious Weeds, Soil and Bees"It *should* say "Permit to Move Plant Pests, Noxious Weeds, Soil, Bees and Charming Ants"Because otherwise it implies that ants are what??? "plant pests" Most ants don't do anything to plants! This is so insulting and BIASED. *furious*

@futurebird would that mean you need to give the ants personality tests and filter out the rude, snobby, or obnoxious ants from the shipment?

@spycrab I'm half serious. Like it does bother me. But what really bothers me is that bees are more popular so it was fixed for the bee people but not the ant people.

@futurebird I was going to say that even the USPS has specific procedures for mailing live bees, but ants are just lumped into "Other small, harmless, cold–blooded animals"......but upon further investigation, it turns out that's because there are stricter requirements for how your box of bees must be packaged and labeled before you mail it

@futurebird I mean, *I* know under what limited circumstances I'd like to mail live scorpions (primarily to those who have wronged me), but I'm not sure the postal service and I are in agreement there.

@DaveMWilburn To be fair I think this is just USDA inertia and not changing things since like the 1890s or something (did they exist then? probably not... ) but it's just an old time-y name. Not very clear, or correct or pro-ant enough. USPS doesn't even really care what people ship. Antkeepers go out of our way to follow the rules, but they really do not care if we do. Which is bad because if "exotic pets" aren't regulated there will be problems.

@futurebird Should be a whole separate "permit to move ants" which is granted by a department of USDA staffed by ants.

@futurebird We know all about those aphid farming ants. So while not plant pests, they are accessories to plant pests and therefore fit into the plant pests category. (Meant to be read humorously and maybe counts as a #LegalHumor joke?)🤣
