Ugh. I'm trying to make a PowerPoint in Microsoft Office 4 for Windows 3.1, right? And I'm not able to do it yet because I've had to upgrade my Linux machine to fix virtualbox! I've spent an hour on this!I'm not sure this "Ubuntu" is ready for the desktop. I need a stable and reliable OS, like Windows 3.1.

There we go! I finally upgraded to xubuntu 24.04, and now I can get to work. I think that took nearly two hours.

@foone out of context, the dissonance between the text and image in this post is art

@foone Xfce…where Win3.1 styles need never die even if we do get dragged kicking and screaming into “client side decoration” and Wayland…

@foone was that tricky for the repo-provided virtualbox? I've got a 22.04 machine where I'm running the virtualbox-provided ubuntu deb build because the repo only has virtualbox 6.x and I need 7.x for the new ancient isa nics support, but I'm looking forward to that just being available in the distro again, provided that isn't a total disaster for some reason, when I upgrade to 24.04

@foone I install Debian Testing to new machines arriving to my fleet only once.None of them are reinstalled, ever (except once which I needed to migrate to x86_64 once).I retired a couple of machines after a decade, but the installation on them was at the same age with the hardware (they're updated, of course).

@foone I've been setting up Windows 3.1 with networking in both PCem and DOSboxX the last few days. That was a learning experience. I jumped from DOS to Windows 95 so the networking stuff was all new to me.

@foone last time I upgraded my xubuntu vm, it refused to remember its IP address after a reboot. After the third so-called “fix”, I decided to just install a new vm and copy over my configs.
