For those in the US, if you have contact with an educational institution (school, college or university) as a parent, student, teacher or community member does that institution do "Active Shooter Drills" ? (Drills on what to do if the campus is attacked by a mass shooter.)

@futurebird@sauropods.win The educational clients I contract for do not have active shooter drills; however, we have lockdown & stay in place drills. Interesting to note this particular client is in a building old enough to have had a shooting range inside of it because back in the day that was something that was an elective.

@puppygirlhornypost Shooting rifles is a fine activity. And if the shooters only ever brought rifles we wouldn't need drills for that.

@rob @futurebird Saint Paul Public Schools does such drills too and has for about 20 years now.Fortunately, they do not do the outright abusive variations I have heard of in other school districts (sending cops through the school pretending to be a shooter, setting off squibs and simulating injuries, etc.).We could have actual effective gun control instead of terrorizing the kids with things that do nothing to help anyone...

@michael_w_busch @rob I used to be against such drills but the rates are high enough that simply having everyone prepared to act calm and take simple precautions is worth it. Imagine the chaos of trying to explain over the PA system "everyone close your doors and hide..." not a great idea. So, now, pragmatically I support them. But, I'm very annoyed that I need to change how I live to accomodate this violence.

@futurebird @michael_w_busch Could not agree more. My wife works in the schools and I am sometimes nervous that she could be targeted (even though the chances are infinitesimal.)

@futurebird for the record, I tapped wthe first option but then when I tried to tap on Vote I managed to somehow select the last option and register that as my vote. So option 1 will be undercounted by 1Our kids had one of these on Day 3 this year.

@futurebird @rob It is the abusive variations of lockdown drills that actually fake shootings that I really have a problem with.I keep coming across news stories of schools being subjected to a fake shooting that they were supposed to react to as if it were real - sometimes without any warning.Nobody should be subjected to that.(And what happens if there is an unannounced fake shooting drill and someone fights the cop pretending to be a shooter?).

@futurebird I'm kinda curious, for the "no" responses, how many of those folks are in a private school system. Because I had thought this was required for all public schools now. And yeah they're awful. Schools in CA are basically all a collection of disconnected single story buildings with an open campus and windows everywhere. It's literally impossible to get kids out of sight from the outside.

@futurebird It's a mix for me. My previous university had lockdown drills. My current university does not. I don't even know if my kid's school has drills, but some schools in the district have had lockouts (can't enter or leave, but school continues inside). My mom (retired teacher & librarian) had teacher training for lockdowns in her last few years, but I don't think her students had drills.
