I fixed my teacher's pension by making phone calls and filling out forms! I did it! This should cover my internet and electric bill when I'm old someday! (maybe) Yay! (Please Clap)

This was harder than getting my masters degree in math by far. Almost as hard as job hunting. (but not quite that hard) Top Ten Hardest Things I Ever Did ... easy and I've done RAGBRAI and the NYC Marathon.

HACK:The things only started working when I started asking the name of each person I talked to, writing down their name and telling each next person I talked who I talked to last and what they said & on what date. This was not a comfortable thing to do it felt very ... peevish... but, if you are struggling with forms and bureaucracy it WORKS. Make a spreadsheet, get a yellow legal pad.Start each call with "Who am I speaking to? Hi ---. I last spoke to --- and they said I needed to ...." etc.

@queenofnewyork Part of it was COVID messing up their office hours and the mail. Part of it was my anti-social tendencies making me not good and keeping things moving. I only started the name thing 5 months ago and since then I made great progress. They had me down for the wrong kind of pension. Wrong start dates for when I worked... tons of missing years. It was awful. But I have it all done now and I could cry.

@alex Well my students will learn it. I've helped a lot of students with social anxiety by pointing out that it's OK to make flash cards to memorize names. If you know people's name you always have something nice to say to them. "Hi Alex!" I wish someone had told me that when I was 15.

@futurebird you basically have to play middle management from the outside and itโs _exhausting_ but effective. Even if Iโm not likely to need it later I note down the phone answererโs name, at the very least ending the call with โThanks, <name>โ is good for rapport.

@futurebird This is exactly what I did when I was trying to get to the bottom of a fraudulent covid business loan taken out in my name too. No one had all the information, but many people knew a small piece of it, and only by writing everything down and telling people what the previous people told me was I able to put all the pieces together

@futurebird @alex I am forever grateful to a previous manager for the lesson of always making a point to learn peopleโs names, especially folks in service or reception roles that you see every day. Most importantly because itโs the decent thing to do, but it has the benefit that as soon as you need help they will, often eagerly.

@TrickTim @futurebird I really thought this was about getting somebody else (a teacher) their pension and was confused why this teacher would pay your internet bill when you're old(Not because of some missing apostrophe (I'm bad with them too), but because I'm tired and didn't know that there's something like a "teachers pension")And this joke made me reread the thread and understand it correctly this time. So it was even a helpful joke!

@Larymir @TrickTim In theory everyone should have a pension. Not a 401k a real pension. If you are between the ages of 35 or older you may have one and not know it! It is worth it to look into it!

@futurebird @Larymir @TrickTim Pension is what convinced me to put off retirement to 64; of I can make it that far I vest at like $450/mo. I know, not much, but it doesn't run out like a 403b.

@futurebird @Larymir @TrickTim I'm living completely on the edge. No pension, nothing to fall back on. Society has completely abandoned me as not useful enough because I wasn't born in a good area and am not normal enough (Asperger's.) My best case scenario is probably finding a crappy job that barely pays expenses (really hard to do right now thanks to zero places even caring about COVID-19 -- we don't believe in it) and working the entire rest of my life until I die of cancer or something.

@nazokiyoubinbou @Larymir @TrickTim So many people I know in this situation many younger than me, but as times goes on this will become a huge issue.I think about these people with nice pensions, social security, and yeah they put in their time but they are pulling up the ladder for the next generation and it makes me livid. If I'd started working just two years later than I did I wouldn't have much of anything. So much has been dismantled and I think we need to get loud about it.

@futurebird @Larymir @TrickTim I could not possibly agree more. I watch so many people insist that those of us unlucky enough to be different enough or born in the wrong time or the wrong place are just not working hard enough. And honestly, I'd like to carry this further. No one should be required to work -- hard or not -- just to be alive. Work should be for bonuses. Getting nicer things rather than just a roof, electricity, etc. They even think us having a refrigerator is a luxury?
