It's happening, people. Google Chrome is moving to the Manifest V3 framework. If you haven't transitioned to a different browser yet, now's the time to do so.https://www.pcworld.com/article/2423294/google-is-killing-one-of-chromes-biggest-ad-blockers.htmlA decent alternative is Firefox with uBlock Origin and Privacy Badger, and if you want to go for full privacy-awareness, I've heard good things about LibreWolf:https://librewolf.netand Floorp:https://floorp.app#google #chrome #browser #privacy #ublock #UblockOrigin #internet #web #online #firefox

@metin If moving to Firefox, make sure to disable all of Firefox’s own (violation of) privacy defaults like telemetry and experiments and change your search engine to DuckDuckGo. Also, don’t accidentally click yes when asked to revert to the defaults if you launch the browser after a period of not using it.Although not open source, I can also recommend Vivaldi as an alternative.

@smilingdemon @metin Indeed, it does as much as the Vivaldi folks are willing to diverge from upstream.

@aral @metin Thanks for telling me this. If I understand it correctly, UI layer is proprietary and everything else is open? Well, that's not as bad, and it's still the best browser(in my opinion), but good to know.

@hagarashi8 @aral Thanks, but I read that it's Chromium-based.

@metin @aral It is, but I don't think it's actually a problem. They have no plans for abandoning Manifest V2, they even explicitly said they won't do it. Even more, they have built in ad blocker. They didn't do any decisions as shady as Mozilla did, and overall it's easily best browser in terms of features, experience and interface. Also, no AI.

@hagarashi8 @aral Sounds good, thanks. What about speed? I've noticed that Firefox is noticeably snappier compared to Chromium-based browsers (I've used Chrome, Edge and Brave).

@metin @hagarashi8 Been using it as my default browser for a while now. Speed hasn’t been an issue for me at least.

@metinI know that "based on chrome" is a common answer, but is this alone sufficient?Are all chrome-based browsers known to behave badly? Can this not be characterized? What specifically do chrome based browsers do that I might not want it to do? @hagarashi8 @aral

@tomjennings @hagarashi8 @aral I’m not knowledgeable in this area, but you’d think Chromium is linked to Google in some way, because they are the developers, aren’t they? And if that’s the case, you’d assume Google will have some kind of access to your data when using a Chromium-based browser.

@metin @hagarashi8 @aral But its code. Even if intricate, it can be black boxed and tested for behaviours.I hate google as much as anyone. But this isnt something to be decided based on feelings.
