@dushman @sun @arcana Rand is weird because she seems to equivocate between advocating for an Aristotelian model of self-interest (there are objective things that are in the self-interest of the human being given our essential nature, including the virtues) & run-of-the-mill subjective hedonism (do what you want / what feels good) — & she seems unaware of this difference.

@smithy @dushman @arcana Objectivism isn't great but I think her concept of enlightened self-interest is valuable. Also she is right that most of society's promotion of altruism is actually meant to transfer wealth and control to other people.

@dushman @arcana @smithy Rand's self interest still didn't allow you to harm other people, this is something that both her proponents and opponents seem to understand. She had a well defined concept of self interest not just colloquial selfishness.

I've only read The Fountainhead. The descriptions, settings and her use of words are really beautiful ... but the characters are all the same in the sense they're all psycho.I get what she was saying in the book, but using the architect analogy just doesn't seem to work. Being unwavering in your vision doesn't really work for things like a building that requires buy-in from all the people investing in it, with their own needs and use cases.

Every time you read someone bitching about capitalism, unless they are indoctrinated revolutionaries, the bitching is really about human tendencies.Its the fundamental human tendency that rots every and all system, including "religion" or "charity". As the saying goes, we cannot design a civilization, the best we can hope for is to survive it.Painting with the wide brush of "capitalism is bad" is an attitude more dangerous that capitalism itself. The reason being that its certain you have nothing better to replace it with, so the opportunists and the criminals going to hijack your half-baked ideology.

@sun @dushman @arcana I actually think this is where she failed - her notion of rational self-interest - doing things in accord w/one's nature that leads to human flourishing - is good & borrowed from philosophical predecessors, but I do think she waffles at times between that and a more base forms of egoism when expounding on it in her writings

Living under capitalism doesn't somehow make you a hypocrite when you're against it.I don't disagree with this, I often get the inverse argument: "You claim to be a libertarian, yet you drive on government roads. Curious."And I have never appreciated the "don't criticize [thing] if you don't have a better solution" meta. Identifying problems is a prerequisite to finding solutions, and even if no solution exists the criticisms can still be valid and useful.In this case, the criticisms are (imo) not valid. They either apply in general, and therefore are not unique criticisms of capitalism in comparison to other systems, or they misidentify the cause of the issue, as in: 'authoritarian government turns out to be bad instead of good (Pikachu face); it must be capitalism's fault somehow'.

That whole argument was really captured in that Matt Boros comic; probably the only comic people remember from that washed up artist who literally moved to Canada ...Something has never sat right with me with this comic; and I honestly have trouble wrapping my head around exactly what it is. Partly because I do make meaningful efforts to get away from systems I don't like (e.g. I didn't shop at Wal-mart from 2010 ~ 2021; and only because Target felt worse). You can't get away from everything, but a lot of people complain without making an effort .. or bitch at others saying it's not going to help when they do make an effort (e.g. non-proselyitizing vegans).
