@olivia@pl.voltrina.net in 2016 iirc it was 3300 arrests over posts online in the uk, just over 400 in russia. and i'm sure its only gotten far worse (though to be fair on both sides)the contrast is comedy though

they exclusively do this in bad neighborhoods (council estates). just go on yt and look up tv license police vids and try finding someone living in a expensive house.anyways i think it's part of paying for cable so they automatically deduct it, still cringe but i've never seen police come after someone apart from on those crime tv shows and yt.

@lamp @anemone @olivia I assume it's a hold-over from when TVs were a luxury product, so expecting public television to be paid for by *everyone* seemed unfair. But yeah, it's kinda weird that that system hasn't been updated.And when I say "weird" I mean "probably left alone because the question of who funds public access to mass media and how might sneakily be one of the touchiest political topics among politicians that we never think about"

@lamp @anemone @olivia As far as I know, the licence is for public TV channels. And you must pay not if you actually watch them but when you have equipment and *can* watch them.
