If there's one thing the OceanGate fiasco should teach you, let it be this:Not all human lives are worth the same. Some people are supposed to die, others aren't. At the same time of four billionaires being lost in a submersible under the sea, a boat with hundreds of refugees was lost too. It has received little to no media coverage outside of humanitarian organizations. Since 2014 exactly 29,949 refugees have died in the Mediterranean Sea alone. Their collective lives and deaths have received less attention than those four billionaires, because their deaths were not supposed to happen. Our system very much causes and tolerates the deaths of refugees, and if we'd truly value each human alike, then there'd be nothing more newsworthy about the lives and stories of those four billionaires than the life of any given refugee.

@ErikUden 29,949 that we know of. You can add quite a margin to that for boats and people that vanished without trace. It's not a business with exact records and manifests. But you are right with the rest.

@ErikUden eh, no. The reason it got the coverage it did was that the vessel and scenario of their demise was so exotic, and everything about it demonstrated extreme levels of hubris that people find fascinating. A billionaire sinking on a surface vessel through negligence isn’t nearly as interesting as several of them being crushed into a pink goo in a millisecond 10,000 feet below the surface.I take your humanistic point on the value of life, but the news cycle favors man-bites-dog
