"Do you have a black or brown zip tie 5"-8" long?""Why do you *assume* I have every tool and craft thing stashed someplace?""I would never assume that.""OK. Because it's not like I am a hardware store.""Absolutely.""...""You *do* have the zip tie, though?"" ... yes. And it means NOTHING.""Of course, my love!"(From "Perils of Being the Handy One Vol. 5 Chapter 27")

@ColesStreetPothole Somehow it hurts more when they are right about all the obscure things I have in the workboxes.

@futurebird me: which do you want: black or brown? 5" or 8"? how many? do you want the quick release kind? maybe these velcro straps would look better. (i swear i'm not the hardware store. never mind that i just came home with over 250' of pipe stashed in my wife's sedan.)

@futurebird 😆I’ve justified “no, I’m not tossing it, I might need it someday” enough times that I no longer get the question. That’s the real win.

@stripey @JasonAnthonyGuy Except when it's exactly what you need. Then it's not so cursed ... then everyone expect me to pull it out of a hat. And, granted, I can do this. But that is NOT the point.

@Rachel_Thorn @JasonAnthonyGuy We need all of them. (this is why I have a little zipper purse with every kind of USB X to USB C converter... that way I can make any kind of cable on the go with a USB C cable. People think this is witchcraft-- there aren't even that many combinations! It's not that hard!)

@futurebird @stripey @JasonAnthonyGuy A specific use case:I designed a PCB to use in one of my classes. We ordered 150 of them. The circuit uses a Raspberry Pi Pico, and so we ordered 155 USB-A to micro-USB cables. Turns out that nearly every student's laptop only had USB-C, and about half of the students didn't have a USB-C to USB-A adapter dongle, so we ordered 100 adapter dongles. In hindsight, USB-C to micro-USB cables were exactly what we needed.

@futurebird @Rachel_Thorn @JasonAnthonyGuy I now spend more time thinking about power cables and data cables while packing than I used to spend on clothes or book selections. And I am so pleased when i can charge all my partner's devices without having some device of my own run out.

@futurebird In my house:“Do we have [x]?”“Yes.”“Can I have it?”“Probably not.”“Why not?”“I lost it. Try looking in the attic, one of 15 cupboards, one of the multiple everything draws or boxes, the shed, the floor, and some other places I forgot... err, actually, I'll just buy a new one.”

@futurebird we keep extra shoelaces instead. They are less reliable in rain, yet they seem less likely to splinter in intense heat.

@catsalad @mhoye @futurebird @nblr @kim @stripey @JasonAnthonyGuy What's worse is that, technically, it can be quite useful. For example, with an external USB-C battery capable of giving enough power to… I don't know, a fridge?I'm know there are batteries out there capable of delivering 60 W over USB-C. And that's all my portable fridge needs, 60 W at 12 V… ok, now I want to try it.

@futurebird I suppose I should admit that I have one USB cable that goes to a 3-pin fan connector. But it's the wrong end. It's the end that comes *from* the fans. You can't actually run fans from it (though most 12V fans won't even start at 5V anyway.) This is because I had a bunch of ancient fans from old computers that no longer worked and a handful of molex to 3-pin connectiors so clipped the wires from the fans and used them for various power sources (mostly 18650 battery clips) to DC-DC converters and a couple of other devices (portable fans and etc.) Of course there is no voltage protection. I have to remember never to connect the 5V to something expecting ~4.5 (or lower in some cases.)I can't seem to find my actual cable, so I whipped up an image in GIMP for now.
