A crime with a fine is only a crime for the poor.

@ErikUden we need to switch to percentage fines (because e.g. speeding with 40 kph too much are currently "just" 200 EUR)

@ErikUden @jstatepost To the rich, a fine is merely a fee.

@ErikUden that's not only for minor offenses. Money buys lawyers who can tell you what's legal and what's not, how to downgrade a felony to a misdemeanor or dodge charges at all, if shit hits the fan a well paid lawyer has much higher chances than a public defender with 6 minutes and pennies per case. A lawyer can tell you how to get away with tax evasion and laundering of millions of dollars and how to get the poor fuck around the corner in jail for misusing a penny of social security.Without money... your only chance is to fuck around and find out. that courts have two entrances: too big to fail... and small enough to jail. could even add a third one, quick lane for the poor. don't believe that? well, let's "park" some money on a nice caribbean island and since you have officially no money no more, get some investors here to build an elbtower. for the hard job of counting money while betting on horse races in hong kong you get millions paid and once the funding ran dry you go chilling with snowden in moscow.try that after 5 or 10 years on social security, when all the savings ran dry, contacts fell asleep and networks are inaccessible.a parking lot on a sunny island costs at the very least 2.4k a year. don't ask why i know. but that's 200 a month. that's about a third of what you get a month. and that's a fee you aren't gonna see again. that's just the empty parking lot. no operations to generate income, no dirty laundry to launder.having just fees and living off of food stamps is not a great start to find investors, yknow. sure, you could start making money, but there's a phone book of regulations with cross references to even thicker books and missing any could get you to prison. a lawyer would be another 220 at least for a meet and greet and 180 per hour after. it's not just a lil fuckup in the idea of misdemeanors. the whole system is set up to keep the poor in their place.

@ErikUden @tenkoman For traffic violations (and I think for some other crimes as well) Finland uses “day fine” system where the penalty is defined as a loss of days of income. Do you might get a fine of “3 day fines” which is converted to actual EUR amount based on your tax record. There were couple of events where rich folks had to pay over 1M EUR speeding tickets.I think the system works and should be adopted elsewhere as well.
