Stupid question, related to the successful incursion by Ukraine... how do you take over a town? I mean like... you go in, I guess you take over city hall or find the mayor? But for a big town, how does it actually work? This is a stupid way to say it, but I feel like there's a kind of awkward phase where you're just a guy driving through neighborhoods with a gun?

@ZachWeinersmith Short version: A state is an entity with a monopoly on the legitimate use of violence within its region of influence.Long version: You get to that.

@ZachWeinersmith As somebody who's had TONNE of interest in this exactly...The answer is (has historically been anyway)... it depends on how you define 'take over'. People's identities are flexible, like 80% of the population doesn't give an F on who's running the town anyway, and if your day-to-day operations are not affected as townsfolk it doesn't matter to you who's in charge. The summary is: whoever has the most, pointiest sticks over an area has 'taken over' the area.
