Asking my husband why press releases have to use the very stressful phrase "For Immediate Release" at the top. Why not something more chill like "Just so you know 🙂"There isn't ever any press release that *isn't* "For Immediate Release" but they all still say that... and every time I see it I feel a little panic rise in my blood. Like... I've got to stand up and run out and get the story out right now! And I don't even have a paper or anything.

@futurebird It's to avoid misunderstanding as the famous press conference were the removal of travel restrictions to West Berlin was announced.

Apparently the other side of "For Immediate Release" is the controversial but important "embargoed exclusive"Information is given to one outlet on condition that they wait for a particular date to publish. Breaking the deal means no future exclusives from that source for a long time.Embargos can be unethical if they span over key dates such as an election day, or the publishing of quarterly reports. Personally, I think all such deals should be disclosed in the article. "

@futurebird I'm going to start trying some alternative phrases at the top of my press releases "For release in 5-7 minutes" "For release whenever is convenient for you" "Release this if you feel like it""For release three hours ago"

@futurebird Is it a leftover from times when many PRs were not actually for immediate release? In long forgotten times (some 20 yrs ago?), press releases (particularly in science) had an embargo date before which journalists were not supposed to publish the material. This gave journos time to research and write good articles ready to be published on the date. Journalists who published earlier would be shunned and taken off the distribution list.

@futurebird It can also just be embargoed but not exclusive, when you share a PR through trusted channels to a number of outlets/freelancers

@StephanMatthiesen "This gave journos time to research and write good articles ready to be published on the date."What and absurd idea! Who has time or patience for that when the other guys are already posting about it on the gold standard for accurate unbiased and well researched public information that is X?

@futurebird @StephanMatthiesen For context, I still send press releases under embargo for the companies I work for, so it's a very common practice today, particularly around product launches. A launch is a very complex thing, and sometimes you have to give the journalists time to dig in on particulars they may not be familiar with, reach out to experts, find context, use the device for a week or two, etc.

@Nicovel0 @futurebird Is that still the system? I though this more or less broke down as PRs now are rarely distributed through closed list of journalists, so people who publish articles earlier cannot really be sanctioned any more.I don't mean exclusives (where just one journo knows about it), but the run-of-the-mill science PR, where it also made sense to give journos a few days to digest it without pressure to publish.

@StephanMatthiesen @futurebird yes we still do it that way, it’s the only sensible way to report on science IMO. Things got speedier at the height of COVID but still the same pretty much. Exclusives are extremely rare AFAIK.

@futurebird @bhawthorne @StephanMatthiesen i also saw this often for press releases regarding music releases or a scientific paper which are published on a certain date but send to the press in advance to be able to publish a review at the same time

@futurebird The guardian winds me up when I see an article that says a politician "will say". Bitch did it happen yet? Then it's not news is it? It's pre-s or something. Don't just copy the damn press release.

Embargoes can reflect a pre-ordained publication date of, for instance, a report. A committee might be asked to publish a report by 1 September. So they schedule publication – physical and/or digital – for, say, 8am that day. They want/need the press to know the gist of it in advance, so they can prepare their reports. But they *don't* want the full report 'leaked' beforehand. There's no lawful enforcement of any of this, at least in the UK. It's ... an understanding, old boy.@futurebird

@futurebird @bhawthorne @StephanMatthiesen Or the relative power of one of the press outlets. During the great beer blogging outbreak of 2010, we were constantly shut out of breaking stories because an exclusive had been promised to either the local business or general readership newspaper. And it's still a common practice in the tech press.

@futurebird The most interesting type of embargo I know is when the Australian government releases its annual budget. Because it's big, journalists get a whole day with it to write their stories—but because advance knowledge of the contents would be perfect for insider trading they are literally locked away in a government building with their phones confiscated. It's like "For Release When We Let You Out"

@clew @negative12dollarbill Allowing journos to roam free is equivalent to releasing information. It's like "The Fundamental Law of Antkeeping"If something contains ants, and you open it, then ants will come out of it.

@Red_Shirt_no2 Did they chew a hole to get in? I'm always curious how they sense where food is. Of course I want to see photos and find out who it was... but I do realize that's a bit odd. Though my friends all text me photos of the ants they find and I love it.

@futurebird Embargoes have a practical use with tech. For instance, the President's State of the Union address is provided in advance to news outlets so they can upload it to their sites - but embargoed from going live until the speech starts.
