Everyone has a mix of both masculine and feminine traits. If you start measuring jaw lines, hip ratios you *will* slowly go crazy & eventually be convinced that everyone is fake. Because all of these traits have fuzzy borders. If you don't want to strive to be non-transphobic because it's moral and cool? Do it for your mental health. Consider looking at Jean-Claude Van Damme and thinking ... he's kind of feminine in some ways and being *mad* about it. That sounds like misery to me.

I am not making this up they really came for him at one point on twitter. I've seen multiple people develop this complex and it's so odd that it keeps happening.

@futurebird When I was a medical student in 1989-1990 we were taught that skeletons could be reliably identified as male or female (mostly based on the shape of the pelvis). Even then it only applied to white Europeans, and now it's accepted that it's so inaccurate even with them that it's not something you could ever rely on.

@futurebird as we age we naturally ‘transition’ a bit. Men with less testosterone, women with less estrogen. Both experience the physical and emotional effects of this…nonbinariness of aging. God made us all gender fluid.

@futurebird I had really hoped we would have moved passed measuring of heads by now. 😒 https://dynasty-auctions.com/en/hitler-and-israel-the-war-of-the-races-the-early-call-of-the-french-ambassador-about-the-danger-of-nazi-germany-france-1934/

@futurebird this brings to mind the utter impossibility of the "average man" the military looked for in the 40s and 50s as they tried to design one size fits all equipment. It turns out that if you start measuring across I think just five or six traits, the number of people within one standard deviation for ALL of them drops to almost zero, and by seven or eight it's literally zero for most populations.

@futurebird one of the more deranged subcultures that's popped up over the last few years (which is a pretty huge achievement) is the transvestigators who have been forced by their own methods to conclude that every single person in public life is not only trans, but nefariously so

@futurebird Van Damme is not a good example of anything. For example, the Street Fighter movie. Most of that budget was spent on his fucking cocaine to the point where Raul Julia, dying of stomach cancer, was the only actor who saved the movie.

@futurebird 1/n As you mention measuring traits ... it reminds me of a very ugly past.In the 19th century, eugenic ideologies emerged with pseudosciences such as phrenology, where the face and skull were measured in order to draw conclusions about the nature of people. One of these "scientists" was Cesare Lombroso in the 19th century. Eugenic ideologies emerged with pseudosciences such as his phrenology, where the face and skull were measured in order to draw conclusions about the nature of

@futurebird That’s one of the things that registered for me when I started questioning my gender presentation consciously about 10 years ago; that whatever facial/body type someone has, there’s someone who shares almost that exact type who would be considered the “opposite” gender. For a little bit it was kinda wrinkling my brain and then I realized it pretty much dovetailed with my primary philosophy: “people are people” (with apologies to Depeche Mode 😁)

@RogerBW Oh yes! So many findings in archeology were assigned to men because they showed power or wealth. And then it was discovered via DNA that they were women. And it's rather new in archeology to admit that people in history had more a gender fluidity than binary thinking: https://www.sapiens.org/archaeology/transgender-people-exist-in-history/@futurebird

@futurebird This may not be entirely germane, but these categories are cultural. Anyone reading this wouldn't consider them axiomatic. The native people around here have Twin Spirit code, oh they have male and female - and specific work is assigned to each - but the Twin Spirit people ( please don't call them winkte ) are men who take on woman's spirit. They're spiritual people. It's just a whole lot easier for everyone to accept people as they are.

@futurebird This makes me think of all those (largely incel?) groups that rate women out of ten and really it’s just someone’s own preferences but they claim it’s all scientific standards of beauty. If it actually made them feel better that would be something I’d be more grudgingly okay with, but it’s just part of tearing each other and other people down and adds to their misery. But if we can’t use appearance to make people feel lesser, what is it’s purpose, I guess. 🙄

@futurebird Also! Traits that are considered masculine or feminine are time/culture dependent. For example: a high hairline, closer to the top of the head than the forehead. Today, in modern America, most people would consider this a masculine trait, a sign of a receding hairline, part of male pattern baldness. In 1300s Europe, women plucked their hair to achieve this look, as a large forehead was a sign of feminine beauty; the church even frowned upon it as an act of vanity.

@billiglarper @futurebird They tell a story in Prague, that the SS were told by Heydrich to take down the statue of Felix Mendelsohn on the Opera House, It was one of many. Not knowing which was Mendelsohn, they decided to take down the one with the biggest nose (all Jews have big noses, according to Nazis). The one they removed turned out to be Richard Wagner!

@funkula and then they claim "double trans"-- that some openly trans people are in fact detransitioning back to their sex at birth. Dylan Mulvaney is AFAB, apparently, and Elliot Page AMAB.@futurebird

@Tattie @funkula *instant ignorance proximity headache*How.No. No I don't care. Gender is amorphous and binaries are a fragile illusion. Thinking deeply at all about gender makes this obvious and I think it makes people spiral. They couldn't possibly be seeing a world without clear boundaries... no it has to be a conspiracy to trick them. It's ugly but also sad. I do not think these people are happy or having fun. A hell of our own ignorance is the worst hell.

@futurebirdI enjoy arguments like this. "Even if you are completely selfish, here's a good reason to support [insert policy here]: it's good for *you*." It appeals directly to people who are wholly selfish and/or bigoted while also reaching out to people who can be convinced to do the right thing.
