I must be turning into a grumpy old man. Today I saw about 15 people walking around the supermarket wearing enormous pairs of headphones. Why are so many people trying to cut themselves off from society? Blatantly saying I'm not interested in the world around me. #stoptheworldIwantotgetoff

@iangriffin Some autistic people use ear muffs as a disability support. They allow autistics to be in environments where background noise is overstimulating, exhausting or even intolerable.

@scattermutant @iangriffin yes, some supermarkets even have low-sensory hours when noise-sensitive people can shop with less stress. Maybe you went during that time?

@seawall @scattermutant nope. The supermarket doesn't have Music. Also (I should point out) I am personally partially deaf and have to wear a badge pointing it out because deafness is quite hard to understand for most people. Maybe I just want to hear sound while people with headphones want to cut it out!

Which makes me I'd like to have badges saying something like "hello, I'm autistic" and "ADHD" with a big tick next to it (note: both of these are true for me). Also reminds me I need to find (or replace) the badge with an invitation to kōrero i Te Reo Māori ki ahau.(1/2)@iangriffin @seawall @scattermutant

Which then gets me thinking about designing a set of patches. Riffing off the look and construction of badges earned in pseudo-military youth orders like Scouts and Guides, Girls/ Boys Brigade, and St John Cadets.A patch for each disability/ neurodiversity, but why stop there? Genders, sexualities, nationalities, ideologies. You can have a patch, and you can have a patch, everyone who wants one gets a patch!(2/2)

@strypey and we could gift patches to friends and relatives. For example give your racist uncle the racist patch, or the arsehole patch, or both!

@rogerparkinson > For example give your racist uncle the racist patch, or the arsehole patch, or both!Is it weird that I look forward to the day when race relations have come so far that I'm seen as someone's "racist uncle"?

@strypey to avoid being a racist uncle we just have to keep growing with the times. I look back on my own trajectory and I've learned a lot over the years, and I hope to keep increasing my understanding and tolerance. But not for Nazis of course.

@rogerparkinson> I hope to keep increasing my understanding and tolerance. But not for Nazis of courseNot for fascism or fascist behaviour, of course. People shanghaied and programmed into following them ("Nazis"), both deserve and need understanding and tolerance, even as we firmly challenge the philosophy and behaviour. Indeed, denying full control of their recruits' thinking is the most effective way to defang fascist movements, before they become a political problem.
