I have tried to understand this for years. I've read some "cat advice pages" but they tend to just address why cats meow. Eg. the meow gets a reaction they like etc. But why do some cats go into another room (not the room where they are fed) then meow really loudly in that room? There is nothing in there, I've checked. My current theory is Pica likes to be called. Since I do call her when she pipes up and she comes right away. I will try not calling her and see what happens.

@futurebird I read they don't meow at each other, either. The argument was it's something they've trained _us_ with. When Ramses starts hollering in the other room it's usually because she's playing with Manfred Manatee (stuffed animal).

@josh0 Pica is getting up in years and I do think she may get a little confused.

@helplessduck Pica isn't playing, and she's kind of shocked if I come to her. She seems to like it best if I call her. I have a feeling after tying not doing it we will go back to doing it.

@futurebirdOur cats have a hunting cry that can sound like a wail for help (from our older tabby) or the sweetest little mew you ever heard from our floofy sisters. I hear it when they've captured a stuffed squirrel, and sometimes they bring me their kill in case I feel hungry.

@futurebird I always just assume there's a ghost in that room. I'm kidding. My dog once did a joyful "WooWoo" in an empty room. Like you, I checked. No one in sight, no tv to react to. He was just having a moment of contentment? Or maybe he was recalling something that made him happy? Who knows. It's darling, though.

@futurebird Shortly after my ex-husband's company was sold he was in the second round of downsizing. He used his severance package to spend 6 months growing his freelance side gig. One of our cats got so used to him being home all the time she did the wailing from the other room thing after he took a new day job.I think she wanted proof of love. Once we called her to us, she ran like the wind to grab a lap.

@futurebird I've heard that cats will meow to try to draw out a predator? Just checking to make sure the room's safe? Not sure how that works though.I've also heard that they'll meow a lot for a few days if they move into a new home, but I haven't had a cat do that yet.

@futurebird One of our cats does this. Funnily enough, for years, she barely made any sound. Then she became very vocal and has now taken to bellowing, or yodelling, in the middle of the night 😂

@futurebird Hilo will go up to the third floor, as far from us as possible, and (as we say) Sings the Song of Her People. She stops if we show up to check on her, and sometimes she starts up again when we leave.

@futurebird My not-very-smart cat Fred does this. He can end up sounding quite distressed. He generally won't come if I try to call him out anyway, so I've started trying not to react to see if that discourages him.

@futurebird my cat does the "go into the room nobody is in and meow loudly" thing quite frequently. I don't know why. For years I did nothing about it, except to peek in and see that everything was actually ok. But lately I've taken to throwing socks at her. This will probably result in me losing socks, so I should stop, but ...

@futurebird one of ours likes doing this in the middle of the night in the bathroom. Makes us crazy some nights. Neighbors 3 houses down car hear her if windows are open. Grrrrrrrr
